First things first… how much did you ADORE Zeke in The Immortal Rules? If you’re thinking “it’s on my TBR”, then bump that baby right up to the top, because if you’re a fan of vamps and urban fantasy, you’re gonna love this series!  Check out our review of The Immortal Rules here to see what All-Star Reviewer Rachel had to say about it!

Right, so Zeke. Disciplined, controlled, authoritative, a natural leader, loyal, and has a killer smile and sense of humor.  Then there’s Allie.  Turned only to avoid death at the hands of rabids, she’s determined to make the most out of her new life and still hold on to her human morals.  Oh yeah, and she’s badass with a katana.  A heroine like that needs a solid male counterpart, and Allie and Zeke are just about perfect together!

zekeExcept they can’t be together, not really.  Allie constantly wars with her inner beast and Zeke has to fight the urge to kill her for what she is.  That one giant roadblock is what makes their relationship so addicting and keeps you reading to find out what will happen next.  It’s dangerous for them to even consider being together.  He hunts vampires and shepherds lost humans to safety.  She feeds on humans (granted, not the same type of “good people” he protects, if she can help it) and is ever-trekking through dangerous territory inhabited by vicious packs of rabid, mindless vampires trying to find her sire.  They even differ in their life philosophy and moral compass.  Zeke was rigidly raised to respect the rules and take no shortcuts and Allie, having barely survived as a human on the fringes of a vampire city all of her life, takes chances when she gets them and has no compunctions about cheating the rules as long as it won’t hurt anyone.

Those differences, though, are also what make them so good for each other.  Allie brings out the best in Zeke when she pushes him to wake up and face the real world… a world that doesn’t always play bymonster a set of rules or do what’s expected.  She helps him see value in the soul of a person, whether that person is human or vampire.  And Zeke, he keeps Allie grounded in all the reasons why structure and camaraderie are a good thing, shows her what she can have if she’s brave enough to tame the beast inside and accept that she can do some great things with all that supernatural speed and strength.

The biggest kicker though, is that Allie will always hunger for his blood and she will never stop killing.  That’s just what she is.  And Zeke will always be the leader Jebediah Cross raised him to be, stalwart and strong, with the stanch belief that the world is more black and white than it has shades of grey.  The biggest danger each of them faces is not from their own personal demons or being predator and prey.  The one thing that seems so insurmountable in The Eternity Cure and makes their love feel so much like Romeo & Juliet is that loving means dropping your shields, letting that person in… and opening yourself to the greatest pain, because all it takes is one misstep and someone dies.  Allie and Zeke would rather deny their feelings than take even the smallest risk of harming the other.

Aaah! It kills me!  What do you guys think?  Are they destined to be together or apart?

The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden #1) by Julie Kagawa

To survive in a ruined world, she must embrace the darkness…

Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a walled-in city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten. Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them—the vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself dies and becomes one of the monsters.

Forced to flee her city, Allie must pass for human as she joins a ragged group of pilgrims seeking a legend—a place that might have a cure for the disease that killed off most of civilization and created the rabids, the bloodthirsty creatures who threaten human and vampire alike. And soon Allie will have to decide what–and who–is worth dying for…again.

Enter Julie Kagawa’s dark and twisted world as an unforgettable journey begins.

The Immortal Rules was chosen as one of GraveTells April 2012 Books of the Month!

About the author

Julie Kagawa was born in Sacramento, California. But nothing exciting really happened to her there. So, at the age of nine she and her family moved to Hawaii, which she soon discovered was inhabited by large carnivorous insects, colonies of house geckos and frequent hurricanes. She spent much of her time in the ocean, when she wasn’t getting chased out of it by reef sharks, jellyfish and the odd eel.

To pay the rent, Julie worked in different bookstores over the years, but discovered the managers frowned upon her reading the books she was supposed to be shelving. So she turned to her other passion: training animals. She worked as a professional dog trainer for several years, dodging Chihuahua bites and overly enthusiastic Labradors, until her first book sold and she stopped training to write full-time.

Julie now lives in Louisville, Kentucky, where the frequency of shark attacks are at an all-time low. She lives with her husband, two obnoxious cats, one Australian shepherd who is too smart for his own good and the latest addition, a hyperactive Papillon puppy.
