Movie discussion: Dracula Untold… is best Dracula movie yet?

by davincikittieOctober 25, 2014

Best freaking Dracula movie ever!

Yeah yeah, Bela Lugosi, Gary Oldman, whatever. Forget the horror version, THIS is my kind of Vlad! I expected this movie to be just okay and I was practically giddy with enjoyment throughout the entire film. You couldn’t have pried me out of my seat!

Did I insult your favorite Drac? 😉 Read on then tell me about it in the comments!

Why did I love it so much? Dracula Untold was written with just the perfect combination of horror, romance, loyalty, and revenge. The characters did the right – or perhaps, wrong, depending on how you look at it – things at the right times for the right reasons. The visual effects were beautifully realized, with imaginative and appropriate transformations and powers for Dracula himself in particular. It didn’t feel cheap or over-enhanced like too many movies do today, banking heavily on graphics. This film is definitely carried by the acting, on both Luke Evans’s part and his entire supporting cast.

And – especially for a lover of Jeanine Frost’s Night Huntress books – could there be a more ideal actor to play Vlad the Impaler? If I were casting for an actor to portray the early – more human and vulnerable – days of our favorite vampire prince, this is exactly how I would have imagined him. Luke’s performance is an addicting mix of tormented, driven, loyal, scary, alluring, and badass. I couldn’t stop thinking of Frost’s Vlad the entire time and I loved that!

So, have you seen Dracula Untold? What did you think?

Night Huntress fans, did having read Ms. Frost’s reimaginings of the Dracula story factor into how you enjoyed this movie?

Hey Gaby! Yeah I really like Night Huntress. It’s urban fantasy though, so book #1 doesn’t have a happy ending. Be sure to read both #1 and #2 if you get started on it! Bones is mah fave!
