Review: Destined Mate by Katie Reus

by Kenra DanielsJanuary 15, 2012

TLDR recap:

When Angela raids a werewolf pack to rescue her friend, and fellow vampire, the last person she expects to run into is Knox, the lover she fled after being turned. Except Natalia doesn’t need rescuing, and Knox no longer seems to hate vampires, if his physical reaction to her is anything to go by. Can they overcome the ancient enmity between their people, and pick up their relationship where they left off?

Destined Mate moves along at breakneck pace, with heart pounding action, both between the sheets, and out. This novella has more action packed into it than many full-length novels, with two major fight scenes, both excellently choreographed.

The intimate scenes are sizzling, with plenty of emotional development. We see both Knox and Angela’s points of view as they reunite after ninety years apart. The showing of those viewpoints is where the problem comes in.

For most of the book, point-of-view shifts come at the ends of scenes, as is common in many paranormal romances. But during the intimate scenes, some point-of-view changes occur with paragraph breaks. The effect is disconcerting. We’re going along in Angela’s point-of-view, then suddenly, a new paragraph finds us in Knox’s, often without realizing it immediately. Commonly known as head-hopping, this technique has fallen out of favor in the last few years, though there are still plenty of authors who use it.

Destined Mate has plenty of conflict, both interior and exterior. Vampires and werewolves hate each other, despite the formal peace treaty about to be signed, so Angela fully expects to be killed when Knox’s men capture her. If they’re going to have a chance at rebuilding what they once shared, Knox and Angela will have to deal directly with that hatred.

Memorable quotes:

Is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?

Twisting and struggling she fought the viselike grip. When she felt her attacker’s hard-on against the small of her back she screamed and lashed out with her foot, connecting with his instep. It didn’t faze him.
“You perverted beast!” She twisted until she could see the shifter’s face then froze. It was him. A thousand-year-old Alpha…her old lover. “Oh shit.”
With pursed lips, Knox shook his head. “Such language,” he murmured.
