Book Tour & Giveaway (US/Int): A sneak peek at The Darkest Craving and an exclusive interview with LOTU author Gena Showalter
GraveTells fans love their Lords of the Underworld, so I was really excited to sit down for an interview with the fabulous Ms. Gena Showalter for the book tour of her upcoming release, The Darkest Craving. GT gave readers the opportunity to tell us what they absolutely must know about the series and the new book, and we had some very enthusiastic responses! Thank you to everyone who sent in questions and to Ms. Showalter for being our guest today. Let’s get started!
DaVinciKittie: Welcome, Gena! We are SUPER excited to have you as our guest today! The tour is just kicking off, but I bet you have some exciting stops planned…
Gena Showalter: I’ll be doing (roughly) twelve blog stops, attending a few online parties, and hosting all kinds of contests—and I’m foaming-at-the-mouth eager LOL!
DVK: From inception to the completion of final edits, how long did it take to craft The Darkest Craving?
GS: About a year. I wrote the first draft, and sent it to my editor. She read it and suggested changes (characters quirks/plot). I made the changes and sent it back to her. She read it and had a few more changes. I made those and she did a line edit. I went over that, making even more changes. After that, the book hit a fresh pair of eyes with the copy editor. I then had to go over her questions and changes (and make more of my own). Then it went to…I don’t know where for formatting, and I got to take one more look (checking for typos). During all that time, the cover had to be designed, and a model picked, a photo shoot set up. I’m always amazed by how much work goes into a single book.
DVK: Are there any parts of the story that are particularly special to you? Anything that was tough to write emotionally?
GS: I had a lot of fun with this book. The Fae have been secretly watching the Lords of the Underworld for centuries, so, to them, the Lords are celebrities. In Séduire (the realm of the Fae) there are books written about the Lords and their exploits, and there are even fan clubs. I still smile when I think about the heroine wondering if it would be totally gauche to ask Kane for an autograph—while he’s recovering from torture.
DVK: Our first Reader question is from Buffy Kennedy, one of our fab GT reviewers! Buffy asks: “What inspired you go back and write The Darkest Fire (the prequel to the series)? Does it matter at what point you read it? Do all the short stories need to be read in order?”
GS: The original release date for The Darkest Night had just been pushed back by about six months, and I felt terrible about the wait. So, I sat down and wrote a short story that could be released as an e-book far sooner. And the only short story I would recommend reading in order is The Darkest Angel. It’s to be read before The Darkest Passion because it introduces one of the main characters (Aeron’s heroine). And okay, not to mention the fact that it stars a virgin angel warrior and the naughty female who seduces him.
DVK: Buffy said she’s still working her way through the series, but also wanted to find out… “As sexy as the men are, they’re pretty rough around the edges. Do they soften at all having a woman around (both after Ashlynn joins them in the first book or as they find mates of their own)?”
GS: I think they soften in some ways, but become rougher in others LOL As the women infiltrate their lives, the warriors begin to reveal hints of gentleness and tenderness, and yet, their protective instincts kick into high gear and I think that makes them far more dangerous to everyone outside their trust circle. When it comes to protecting what they love, they tend to kill first and ask questions later. Or maybe just kill first and never ask any questions.
DVK: Our next few questions are from Rachel Elizabeth, GT’s 2012 All-Star Reviewer. Rach says “Does William play a big role in The Darkest Craving? Will William’s relationship with Gilly continue to develop? Will we learn more about William’s backstory in The Darkest Craving?”
GS: William plays a very big role in The Darkest Craving. As much as he will deny it, he is Kane’s sidekick, and readers will get to see a side of “The Panty Melter” they’ve never seen before. Let’s just say…Papa, and leave it at that. Oh, and Gilly does makes a small appearance.
DVK: Rachel also wanted to know… “Will we see any interactions between Galen and Legion? Are there any plans for Galen to have a book? Or a bigger side-story?”
GS: Legion makes a small appearance, and it was as I wrote the scene that I realized I simply must give her a happily-ever-after. Right now, there isn’t a book contracted for Galen, but yes, I think I would like to write one, and yes, I do think Legion is his heroine. The more I roll him through my mind, the more depth I see to him. I think two such broken characters could be good for each other.
DVK: Galen isn’t the only character readers wanted to have his own story! GT reader Viki Sloboda asked “When will Torin will get his own story? I really feel for this poor guy.”
GS: You know, I actually think Torin’s story will come after Kane’s. Something happens to Mr. Tor Tor in The Darkest Craving—both a dream come true and a nightmare. I’m ready to see him settled.
DVK: GT Reader Karin Anderson has her eye on Torin too… “Do you know who Torin’s heroine will be yet? If so, can you give us a hint?”
GS: I do know her—at least, I think I do right now. Things could change when I actually sit down to write the story, but if not, you’ll get a glimpse of her in The Darkest Craving. Hint: she’s not who you think she is LOL
DVK: Going back to Rach’s questions… “Will Cameo be the last book? And have we met her HEA?”
GS: Yep, I’m thinking Cameo will be last. And yes, if things go the way I’m planning, you have already met her happily-ever-after. You’ll just get to know him better in The Darkest Craving.
DVK: Rachel also wanted to know… “Will William get a book after all the original Lords books are done? Do you know who he ends up with?”
GS: More and more I’m thinking William will get a book after Torin but before Cameo. That’s not official, that’s just my current mindset. I think it will depend on just how badly I screw up his life. Because yes, a storm is headed Willy’s way.
DVK: Readers love getting to see characters from different series cross paths. Rach wondered… “Will the Lords ever meet the Angels of the Dark characters (besides Zacharel) such as Thane, Koldo, etc.?”
GS: I think so, yes. William has business with Thane and Axel, and he won’t rest until it’s settled. Right now I’m in the middle of Thane’s book, and Thane could use some LotU help. I’m expecting a few Lords to walk onto the pages at any moment.
DVK: One last question from Buffy! “What inspired such a dark world? The Pandora myth, the concept of what came out of the box, and the balance the Lords must find as they cope with demons they live with… just so imaginative!”
GS: Once I had the grain of an idea – immortal warriors stole and opened the box – it was just a matter of playing connect the dots. My mind started bouncing from one idea to another, filling in the blanks, creating a picture I couldn’t wait to paint. It went something like this:
The myth claims evil was trapped inside Pandora’s box. What’s more evil than demons? Okay, so, demons it is. But where would men trying to contain evil live? Somewhere remote, but also steeped in mystery of its own. They wouldn’t want locals coming after them with pitchforks.
And so on LOL
DVK: Wrapping things up, from author and AGPress member Tracy V. Nickels asks, “Are all the Lords of the Underworld stories available as a set? I got started reading them through Harlequin Nocturne but don’t know if I have all of them. I’m sooo hooked on them!”
GS: You know, I’ve seen the first three books sold as a package deal. But I’ve never seen the others in any type of boxed set (though I’d love to!). Right now, I think they are only sold individually.
DVK: Gena, thanks so much for chatting with us today about the Lords of the Underworld and The Darkest Craving. The book releases from Harlequin on July 30th. Think we could have a sneak peek? Any last secrets to impart? *wink*
GS: Absolutely a sneak peek! And I guess I should warn you that Kane refers to the heroine as Tinker Bell, or Tink so you don’t think he’s cheating on Josephina J
His skin prickled, and maybe he moved. Maybe he spoke. Her gaze lifted to meet his. Her lips parted on a startled exhalation. Could she see the rawness of his need?
“Kane.” A breathy entreaty.
In that moment, the cry of the demon ceased to matter. The past faded, leaving only the present…the future, and the unstoppable tide of the pleasure to come. Every bone vibrated. He needed to get inside her. Here. Now.
It would be agony.
It would be ecstasy.
Tension coiled low in his gut, only to spring apart and jolt him into a stand. “Leave us,” he said, his voice a broken rasp.
No questions. No protests. The two seamstresses flittered from the room, shutting the door behind them.
The teapot shattered on the tray, dark liquid spilling everywhere. Defeat’s newest attempt to deter him.
Tink didn’t seem to notice, was too busy watching him. “I-is something wrong?”
Silent, he stalked toward her. A predator with a purpose. He was done resisting. Done thinking about all the reasons why not. Today, he was taking something.
Perhaps sensing the dark, greedy urges driving him, she straightened with a snap. Her breathing quickened. “Kane,” she said.
“Tell me to stop.” He stood a mere heartbeat away, their gazes locked together, trapped. Nothing else would halt the madness.

His powers — Inhuman…
His passion — Beyond immortal . . .
All her life, Ashlyn Darrow has been tormented by voices from the past. To end the nightmare, she has come to Budapest seeking help from men rumored to have supernatural abilities, not knowing she’ll be swept into the arms of Maddox, their most dangerous member — a man trapped in a hell of his own.
Neither can resist the instant hunger than calms their torments . . . and ignites an irresistible passion. But every heated touch and burning kiss will edge them closer to destruction — and a soul-shattering test of love . . .
Though they carry an eternal curse, the Lords of the Underworld are irresistibly seductive — and unimaginably powerful . . .
Though she has lived for centuries, Anya, goddess of anarchy, has never known pleasure. Until Lucien, the incarnation of death—a warrior eternally doomed to take souls to the hereafter. He draws her like no other. And Anya will risk anything to have him.
But when the merciless Lord of the Underworld is ordered by the gods to claim Anya herself, their uncontrollable attraction becomes an anguished pursuit. Now they must defeat the unconquerable forces that control them, before their thirst for one another demands a sacrifice of love beyond imagining.…
Reyes is a man possessed. Bound by the demon of pain, he is forbidden to know pleasure. Yet he craves a mortal woman, Danika Ford, more than breath and will do anything to claim her—even defy the gods.
Danika is on the run. For months she’s eluded the Lords of the Underworld, immortal warriors who won’t rest until she and her family have been destroyed. But her dreams are haunted by Reyes, the warrior whose searing touch she can’t forget. Yet a future together could mean death to all they both hold dear.…
Bound by the demon of Doubt, Sabin unintentionally destroys even the most confident of lovers.
So the immortal warrior spends his time on the battlefield instead of the bedroom, victory his only concern… until he meets Gwendolyn the Timid. One taste of the beautiful redhead, and he craves more.
Gwen, an immortal herself, always thought she’d fall for a kind human who wouldn’t rouse her darker side. But when Sabin frees her from prison, battling their enemies for the claim to Pandora’s box turns out to be nothing compared to the battle Sabin and Gwen will wage against love.
Having endured weeks of torture in the bowels of hell, Kane wants nothing to do with his beautiful rescuer, Josephina Aisling. The half-Fae female threatens to awaken the demon of Disaster inside him—a beast he’s determined to kill, no matter the price.
Josephina is hunted by a brutal enemy—her royal family—and Kane is her only source of protection. He’s also the only male to ever set her aflame, and even he succumbs to the heat. But as they navigate the treacherous world of the Fae, their love might just tear them apart…
