Giveaway (US/Int): Getting up close and uncomfortable with Alaskan Fire’s Wereverine Jack

by davincikittieJanuary 20, 2013

Please help me welcome indie author Sara King!

Last year, indie author Sara King submitted a book for review that caught my attention with its vibrant blurb, enticing excerpt, and unique urban fantasy take on paranormal creatures (Alaskan Fire). Once I started reading it, I couldn’t put it down and found myself completely drawn into the world of the Guardians of the First realm, firmly on Team Jack and rooting for Blaze to find a way to save him from himself. As romantic heroes go, Jack is anything but typical; he is short, grouchy, and hairy, with a vicious temper and a serious case of the munchies. He’s also incredibly loyal and a fierce warrior with access to a scary amount of supernatural power. Blaze, his lady love, is also not your typical romantic heroine, with her exceptionally tall, lanky figure and blazing red hair. She is one of the most determined and capable women in urban fantasy and has a heart of gold.

When offered the chance to do an interview with these two, I totally jumped on it… even though it involved me having to fly out to the Alaskan Bush in a tiny float plane and brave all the wilderness critters a city girl like me generally prefers to avoid. The interview is below, for those of you brave enough to come along with me and get up close and personal with Wereverine Jack. I also took some time to grill… er… chat with Ms. King, and some of her answers may shock and surprise you. Of course, what fun would an interview be without an awesome giveaway opportunity?! At 13 pages, I know the interview is long, so feel free to download it to your local device or bookmark it to come back when you have some free time. You’ll be glad you did since the prize is a $50 Amazon gift card from Parasite Productions and the comment questions are based on the interview. *wink* This giveaway will be open for two weeks from today, so take your time and feel free to leave other questions and comments for Ms. King!

PS – Most of the credit for this interview goes to Ms. King! I sent her some basic prompts and questions and she completely ran with it. I loved how she personified me as a rumor-hungry, photo-manic journalist. So fun!

Blaze MacKenzie is a freakishly-tall heiress who just discovered that her ‘parents’ actually found her abandoned as an infant in some bizarre human sacrifice in the woods. Along with that nasty little bit of information came a six hundred thousand dollar check, a strange golden feather, and the ability to move to the Alaska Bush and begin her dream-life living off the Grid.

Unfortunately for Blaze, life in rural Alaska isn’t as peaceful as she expected. Among her many startling discoveries is that her sexy new handyman, Jack Thornton, has already ‘claimed’ the territory that her new lodge is sitting on …

Further complicating matters, Jack makes it clear to Blaze that there are a good many things that go bump in the Alaskan night, and when a pack of werewolves goes rogue and starts killing or turning everyone along the Yentna River, Blaze and Jack find themselves in a fight for survival in this magic-soaked Land of the Midnight Sun.

Alaskan Fire was named as our Book of the Month for July 2012 and the Guardians of the First Realm was a nominee for Most Original Story Universe in our 2012 Readers Choice Awards.

Long ago, Kaashifah the Fury, Chosen warrior of the Lord of War, fought a djinni to a stalemate in an ancient duel of souls. Three thousand years later, she and ‘Aqrab, the passionate djinni prince of the Fourth Lands, are still bound together, each waiting for the other to make that final, killing blow.

To complicate matters, they are being hunted across the vast Alaskan wilderness by a team of holy soldiers who are specially trained—and highly successful—at capturing the numerous magical beings of the Five Realms. In order to save their friends from the Inquisition, some compromises must be made…and some boons given. But in unraveling the magics that bind them, will these two ancient immortals learn to trust each other, or will their own thawing hearts be their undoing?

ALASKAN FURY is a whirlwind tale of two immortals woven together by a three-thousand-year-old curse who are forced to flee across the Alaskan wilderness in search of dragons to save their friends. It is a story of love and adventure, of djinni wish-makings and brutal sword fights, of Inquisitional wits and mythological heroes, of depth of spirit battling bigotry and violence. Fast-paced and full of action, it will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page.

About the author

While Alaskan author Sara King is not six-foot-four with carrot-soup hair and eyes that’ll make a wereverine stare, she does live the same crazy, socially questionable, off-the-grid lifestyle that she writes about in Alaskan Fire. She is fully acquainted with the quirks of outdoor plumbing, grizzly bears, questionable hygiene, private arsenals, and hypothermia, and has a vast and inspiration-rich wilderness right off her front doorstep. *Does DVK refer to Sara? Cuz if it does, she likes pepsi. If it’s the narrator than Shiner Block
What does Jack do to Sara’s room and how does she react?
*he put a fist through the door, she pepper sprayed him and he then proceeded to rip the door off and half the siding
What would you like to ask Ms. King, Jack, or Blaze? _ … I have absolutely no idea 🙂 seems pretty well covered in the “interview”. This is the first I’ve heard of these books and I”m definitely going to have to check them out!

    It’s pepsi.

Jack put his fist into the door. Sarah reacts by pepper-spraying him.

I’m not sure what to ask.

  • January 20, 2013 at 4:06 pm

What brand of fizzy beverage does DVK prefer? Shiner Bock Beer

What does Jack do to Sara’s room and how does she react? Put his fist through the door and pulls it off. Sara pepper-sprays him.

What would you like to ask Ms. King, Jack, or Blaze? What does Sara think of Tim?

DVK prefers to drink Shiner Bock beer and was very suprised that they would have it anywhere outside of TX.

Jack is impatient as usual when forced to summon Sara for her interview. When she fails to answer the door 10 seconds after he first knocks, the hairy weasel puts his fist through the door, then he rips the entire door off the frame. At this point Sara rightfully peppersprays him.

Blaze – we all know that Jack is truly a knight in bloody armor under all that hairy awfulness… how do you remember that when he destroys your porch for giving him a splinter? Isnt it just a little tempting sometimes to literally “light” into him?

Awesome interview! Here are my answers:

    1. Shiner Bock Beer
    2. He puts his fist through & rips the entire door of the frame
    3. I am new to Mrs. King, but after I read this book I am sure I will have tons! Lol, Coke is better than Pepsi Sara!

    Thanks for the giveaway ♡

What brand of fizzy beverage does DVK prefer? If DVK is the narrator (?), then she likes Shiner Bock beer.
What does Jack do to Sara’s room and how does she react? Jack puts his fist through her door and rips out the rest of the door and half the siding. She pepper sprays him.
What would you like to ask Ms. King, Jack, or Blaze? Not so good with coming up with questions – great “interview,” though!

depends on who DVK is it’s either Pepsi or Shiner Bock Beer
Jack put his fist into the door & Sarah reacts by pepper-spraying him.
I really don’t have any questions because I don’t know enough about the book.

Jack puts his fist through her door & she gives him a dousing with the pepper spray
I don’t have any questions as I am new to this author but I have quickly did some investigative stalking and added the works to my TBR, thank you so much for the great interview, wonderful excerpt and chance to win 🙂

What brand of fizzy beverage does DVK prefer?

    Shiner Bock 🙂

What does Jack do to Sara’s room and how does she react?

He put his fist through the door and Sara pepper-sprayed him.

What would you like to ask Ms. King, Jack, or Blaze?

Ms. King — How do you keep track of everything you write? Do you keep a timeline/notes/spreadsheet?

    • January 21, 2013 at 11:26 pm

Hey Arely! I keep a Main Characters sheet for each series, sometimes divided by book to keep character ages separate. The Main Characters sheet for the ZERO series is 24 pages (single spaced) long. Timelines are a must. 🙂

It’s either pepsi or shiner block
He put his fist through her door, so she pepper sprayed him.
What character is the most fun to write for?

    • January 23, 2013 at 3:44 am

Oh wow, Amber, that is a GOOD one! I’d honestly have to say Ryan in my Form and Function series. If you want me to stick strictly to books already published, I’d say Tatiana in Outer Bounds. If you want me to stick to the Guardians series, writing in ‘Aqrab’s point of view was a lot of fun. 🙂 But Jack is…loveable Jack. Don’t make me choose between my babies!! 😛

    January 23, 2013 at 1:26 pm

What brand of fizzy beverage does DVK prefer? well, you asked Blaze for Shiner Bock (tho I understand it’s better in Texas and loses a bit if it’s flavor due to the long transport).

What does Jack do to Sara’s room and how does she react? When Blaze doesn’t get the door opened fast enough he puts his fist thru it & then rips it off the frame – so she pepper-sprays him.

What would you like to ask Ms. King, Jack, or Blaze? Jack – Blaze says you enjoy a goat for a snack, but what is your favorite meal?

What would you like to ask Ms. King, Jack, or Blaze?

Ms. King – What was your absolute favorite scene to write?

    • January 27, 2013 at 6:23 pm

Hi Penni! 🙂 My favorite scene of Alaskan Fire? Man, the whole thing was a lot of fun to write. Jack and Blaze made me cackle madly pretty much throughout. Thunderbird showing up was a special kind of awesome, as was Blaze teaching Jack to write his name. 🙂

Shiner bock, he punches a hole through her door and Sara’s response is to pepper spray him, do blaze and jack plan to have any other children. Would of love to read how they interact during the pregnancy hormonal period.

    • January 28, 2013 at 11:56 pm

      Hi Mary!

Omg the hormonal period, LOL. That’s definitely a book waiting to happen. 🙂 And anything could happen with these two, children-wise. I had to actually skip the hormonal period (for now) because that’s going to happen in AK Fate, which unfortunately exploderated all over me last year. I’m still trying to pick up the pieces. Until then, AK Fiend with Thunderbird. 🙂

DVK was delightfully surprised to get her favorite fizzy Shiner Bock handed to her nice and cold from Blazes fridge.

Poor Jack, no patience there poor man, decided not for Sara to put her panties on and put his fist thru the door , ripped it off the hinges and 1/2 of the house siding too. He sure needs anger management classes.

My question would be for Blaze is: What is the average time frame between your Phoenix changes and how long do they last? Thank you for daring the Alaskan Bush for such a delightful interview. KIM

    • January 29, 2013 at 12:01 am

Phoenix changes… I think that completely depends on whether it’s spontaneous (accidental) or practiced (both of which would be rather fast, maybe 7 seconds tops), or an attempt was made by the POV character to control the shift, which would probably render them in somewhat-sustainable half-states just the same as the demonkin. 🙂

  • January 30, 2013 at 6:38 pm

Having a problem in answering these questions. Maybe I’m getting too old for the computer but here goes:
    1.Texas beer, Shiner Boch
    2. Tore the door off her room so she pepper sprayed him. He fix the room, the door and all the places he punched when he lost his cool.
    3. I am tying to find out about out their child. Is it/he/she a combination of both or a chemria? Did Blaze lay an egg and hatch it or have a baby. What happens when the baby is angry? How was it fed: like a human or like a chick? I need MORE ASAP. Love this series.
