TLDR recap:

The humor, action, and adventure in this book take Esther and company from the theater stage production of a truly terrible vampire play to the abandoned tunnels beneath New York City in a non-stop laugh riot. Series favorites Max, his dog/familiar Nellie, and super smoldering sexy-as-hell Detective Connor Lopez are back, and the much mentioned but never seen Thackeray Shackleton finally emerges. The plot twists abound, the reveals are shocking, and Esther’s sharing a dressing room with the actress from hell, Mad Rachel, who may just have a bigger potty mouth than yours truly. Vamparazzi is a GraveTells Must Read!

Where to start? Where to finish? I loved this book, it’s my favorite in the series so far. Did you know that book one is being re-released in June? EXCITED!  That one’s called Disappearing Nightly, and then, later this year we get Polterheist! I’m telling you I squeed like a fool over the news. Laura Resnick is one of my favorite authors, capable of writing hilarious physical comedy, plots that twist into pretzels and leave you abandoned in a fun house mirror maze, and characters that engage, thrill, titillate, and entertain. For those of you not familiar with this series, it’s time to jump on the go cart and hit the gas pedal. Don’t bother with a helmet, Esther never does, and girl should probably have one.

Each Esther Diamond novel works as a stand alone, but I say grab up all of them and settle down for the weekend. Well, maybe four days, I don’t know how fast y’all read.
Vamparazzi is a great, fast, funny read that answers really important questions like:

  • Why does Max always ask about Lithuanians? What’s his deal anyway?
  • Can Connor be sexy while filthy and are there hidden depths to the sexy ass Cuban/Irish detective we haven’t seen yet?
  • How many ways can Mad Rachel swear at her boyfriend over the phone?
  • Crazed vampire fan girls: Dangerous cultists, misguided fashion victims, or undersexed shrieking fan girls?
  • Does Esther need bodyguards?
  • What do you do with a self-professed vampire who gets tanked and barfs on your waders?

Memorable quotes:

Max Zadok is holding class on vampire hunting. Everybody listen up:

“Ah. The undead vampire is a mystical creature of dark forces, but it is not regenerative. It can be neutralized by dismemberment.”

“That sounds even more unpleasant than staking corpses to their graves.”

“It’s also much more difficult, since vampires don’t hold still for the process.”

“No, I suppose not.”

Okay, I’ve wondered this myself in regard to a certain cold vampire. (Please don’t hit me.)

“So his skin wouldn’t be the only cold thing you’d notice about him,” Thack said with a startled laugh.

“You’re right!” My eyes widened. Daemon, I can assure you, after the first time you’ve had a cold gynecological instrument shoved up your –”

“Please rephrase that thought,” Thack said.

“Well, suffice it to say, there are certain body parts that aren’t coming anywhere near me if they’re cold,” I said firmly. “Plus — cold kisses? A cold tongue? Blegh! Wouldn’t it be like kissing a reptile?”

If you liked Vamparazzi of the Esther Diamond series…

Go out and get the other books in the series already! Sheesh!

If you like urban fantasy with twisty plot lines, kick butt heroines, and magical elements, I think you should try on the books in the Women of the Otherworld series that center around Paige Winterbourne. Paige is a hereditary witch who gets saddled with big responsibilities and has all of the norms she grew up with challenged in book one of her story arc, Dime Store Magic. Plus, her hero is a sexy motorcycle riding geek. Tell me you don’t love that idea.

For people who happen to like some pure fantasy now and then, I can’t speak highly enough of the Green Rider books by Kristen Britain. Sweeping fantasy epics with a heroine who is in constant peril but finds her way out and is the best sort of person around. She’s not full of false bravado or self interest, instead Karigan G’lahadeon is the woman you want at your side in battle because of her selfless bravery, keen intelligence, and determination in the face of terror.

Final thoughts:

Oh, how I love thee, Esther Diamond. Book three dragged for me in some places, with too much history on Voodoo when I wanted to know more about the characters. Once again I was denied nekkid Connor, but the sexual tension was thick enough for a chainsaw, the laughs kept coming, and Mad Rachel’s inventive swear words made me snort. We’ve learned the Lithuanian mystery, seen Thack in the flesh, and watched Esther battle vampires, paparazzi, and even get her own body guard detail. This series just keeps getting better and that’s why Vamparazzi is a Must Read!

About The Author
The Captain
When not in pursuit of two small children, a sausage shaped black lab, workaholic husband, crazed hermit crab, bachelor's degree, Jensen Ackles, or editors, I spend time writing and reading PNR/UF as fast as my overtaxed eyes and fingers can read and type. I'm busily writing a series with plenty of Smex Beam deployment and the occasional short story. I am susceptible to bribes involving chocolate, peanut butter, and interesting combinations of the two.
