Micro-Review: Frat Boy and Toppy (Theta Alpha Gamma #1) by Anne Tenino
Frat Boy and Toppy by Anne Tenino
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
For a book with such a frilly name, Frat Boy and Toppy is a surprisingly engaging and well-built read. The main characters are both well-rounded and plausible, and likable as individuals with unique personalities and back stories before they become a couple.
Reading this book gave me that pleasantly nervous new-love tingly feeling… you know, the kind where your chest gets tight, your breathing shallow, and you seem to exist on hope and anticipation alone? Oh yeah, it’s good stuff. I prefer m/m stories where at least one of the pair is struggling with his sexuality, and “frat boy” Brad definitely is. I also love stories that showcase the fragile bloom of first love and since Frat Boy and Toppy is set in college with one of the characters experiencing a real crush for the first time, it definitely hits that sweet spot.
Frat Boy and Toppy is also insanely sexy. Sebastian is dominating without being controlling; he gives Brad what he needs without steamrolling over his partner’s personality or burgeoning sexuality. And Brad is adorable in his submissiveness, sweet and unsure but still confident and comfortable when it comes to who he is outside of their relationship. Neither of them sacrifice vital parts of themselves to make the affair work and both bring out the best in each other.
This story is heartwarming and witty, with moments of aching tenderness and stubborn ‘guy moments’. All the characters are engaging and likable and there are shining glimpses of cleverness and brotherhood.
If this type of story is your thing, you might also like Str8 Boys by Evangeline Anderson.
