Kiss & Tell Tour: Giveaway & guest post on the power of a kiss by North of Need author Laura Kaye

by davincikittieDecember 3, 2011

Let’s give a big GT welcome to Laura Kaye, author of the celebrated, heart-warming fantasy romance North of Need!

Thanks for having me here today! I’m one of nine authors celebrating their books as part of the Kiss and Tell Tour. Today, I’m celebrating my November release, North of Need, a fantasy romance based on Greek Mythology, by talking about the power of a kiss.

The prince’s kiss awakened Snow White in her casket in the woods. Prince Philip’s kiss reversed Malificent’s curse and awakened Sleeping Beauty and her whole kingdom. The princess’s kiss turned the frog into a prince (well, in some versions!). If Prince Eric would’ve kissed Arial in that boat, Ursula never would’ve gotten her claws in him or nearly overturned the whole undersea world. In romantic fiction—and these fairy tales were many people’s first exposure to just that—kisses are powerful. Watch and listen to this feel-good classic:

[addw2p name=”NorthOfNeed”]

Everyone smiling with me? *grins* There’s a lesson here: when lips meet skin and love is involved, it’s magic. Well, that’s certainly the case in my newly released contemporary fantasy romance, North of Need, a story full of Christmas magic, redemption, and a found sense of companionship and belonging. North of Need is the story of a long-exiled snow god summoned back to the Realm of the Gods to receive an overdue chance at happiness—by healing the heart of a grieving widow, Megan Snow. Here’s a particularly magical kiss they share:

She gripped his wrist and squeezed, stroked his skin with her thumb. “Now, some god around here promised me a kiss.”

“That would be me.” He found her sweet, full lips. Wonderful as they were, though, her lips weren’t his destination. He traced little kisses full of adoration up her left cheek to her cheekbone until he encountered the scabbed-over frostnip.

Power flared in his chest. He opened his mouth, swiped his tongue over the full length of the wound. Absorbed her pain into him.

Megan gasped. Dizziness and confusion descended. Something…something was happening. She gripped onto Owen’s biceps, struggling against the loss of equilibrium. Pleasure surged, too, where his lips trailed fire over her skin, but then he’d licked her, and… She didn’t even know how to describe it. Pins and needles. Zero gravity. Déjà vu.

All of the above together, and more.

Owen pulled back from the kiss heavy-lidded, wearing a look of total satisfaction. His gaze, full of that unnatural light, skimmed from her cheek to her eyes. Words spilled from his lips that Megan didn’t understand, a foreign language she’d never before heard. He spoke with a quiet passion.

Megan’s heart thundered within her chest. She panted. Her equilibrium restored and the room righted itself once again. “What just happened?” she whispered.

“I’ve been dying to make it better,” he said in a quiet, reverent tone.

With a shaky hand, Megan palmed her cheekbone. She dragged fingers over the skin there, the smooth, scab-less skin.

What all of these stories get at isn’t just the power of kisses, but the healing power of love. No matter what happens to us, love can get us through, make us whole, make us better. And it’s out there waiting for each of us. That’s why I love writing and reading romance. What better kind of magic is there in which to believe?

Thanks for reading! And happy holidays!
Laura Kaye

Fantastic excerpt Nina, I think it’s my favorite of the ones you’ve shared so far on this tour.

Call me a little crazy, but the first thing I thought of as I read it was how emotionally healing it is when my dog licks my cheek. There is definately magic in a dog kiss. 🙂

Ahhhhh! Love this talk about healing kisses and the power of love.

Each time I read another little excerpt from this book, I am more intrigued to read the whole thing.

Thanks for the posting and for the giveaway opportunity.

      Sophia, it’s the Captain.

I’m lucky enough to be the reviewer assigned to this book for the upcoming GraveTells review. READ IT!!!!!

In chapter one I was fighting tears. I’ve had this book for exactly one day and I’m up to chapter ten, and only put it down because I had to take a very important phone call last night from a certain awesome red head.

But anyway, trust me, this is not a book to miss. I’m totally involved with these characters. And I don’t think I’m halfway through the book.

    OMG Laura!!!

I’m the reviewer reading your book right now. I had to text DaVinci Kittie partway through chapter one because I was fighting tears.

I generally don’t enjoy third person as much as first because I have a hard time really connecting with the characters. At chapter ten I’m completely invested and feeling heart broken for both of them. (Thank God it’s romance and I know that there’s a HEA in the end because if I got to the end and there wasn’t I might just throw my laptop across the room in rage.)

I also must admit to skipping the excerpt part of your post. The last thing I want right now is a spoiler. 🙂

When’s your next book coming out???? What’s a girl got to do to get an upcoming ARC to review? I will commence with the begging. I’m shameless.

    *end gushing* 🙂

Hi Laura! So great to have you! North of Need is on my list to read too. The Captain is the lucky GT reviewer who gets to do it for the site and she’s been very pleasantly surprised with how much she’s enjoying it. I’m sure you couldn’t tell from her post above! =P

When I told my husband about the dog kisses comment from Kathryn, he heartily agreed. hehe Great discussion topic and writeup! Thanks for visiting!! <3

I am soo thrilled that I found your website, it has introduced me to new writers that I wouldn’t have considered if not for you! I love the paranormal romance and can’t wait to devour Ms. Kaye’s book, if I can even find it in our little rural town. (boo-hoo, hint, hint, wink, wink)

Thanks soo much for the information, and many wishes for a wonderful holiday season.

Regina dahling, it’s an eBook! Doesn’t matter where you live!

I read it on my laptop using Abode reader. (Now, I got it for reviewing purposes, so it was a PDF file.) If you buy it through Amazon or B and N, then you will probably have to download their free software (it will be Nook or Kindle). Either is fine, but for me, I do like the Nook software, since some titles are lend-able after you buy — like at the library. You can loan them to friends who also have the Nook software.

I don’t know if North of Need is lend-able, but GO GET IT!!!! Squueeeee! Look for my review in a few days. Going to write it now.

LOL Regina! Thanks for commenting and good luck! 😀

I just finished this book today, and OH MY GOD it was SO GOOD!!! I already know what score The Captain is giving it and I heartily agree!! Thank you Laura for such a rich and heart-warming book, especially during this season. It’s like opening a gift. =)

My husband called a few minutes ago and was complaining about the cold (we live in Texas – 60 degrees is cold to us). I said “How cold is it?” and he said “39” and I thought (I kid you not) “oh, Owen would love that weather!” HAH!

That’s about what it is here, right now. But it’s raining. For hours and hours already. Like, all day long. Sigh. I hate early winter in Ohio.

But if it somehow gets me a glimpse of a hot as hell snow god, I say bring. it. on. baby!

  • December 6, 2011 at 3:58 pm

    Want this book!!!! >.<
Its a damn shame it wasnt at walmart the few times I went to buy books. Bought Immortal Vampires, Lord of the Abyss, the first book of the Infernal Devices series, and the rest of the house of night series.

    • December 7, 2011 at 9:11 am

Brooklyn–since my publisher is new-ish, the books are unevenly available in stores. However, by this spring, the books in this series should be in stores! Thanks for commenting!

And thanks so much for hosting me!

I just saw a review for I Gotta Say, a menage a quatre (m/m/f/m) by Laura, on the Forbidden Bookshelf and holy smokes!! I had no idea Laura wrote menage erotica! Definitely on my “to read” list!

  • December 13, 2011 at 9:48 pm

Congrats to Vanessa N on winning the card pack from Laura! You should have already received an email from her, so let me know if you haven’t and I’ll check for you.

Thanks to everyone who commented! What a great comment roll! <3
