With over 30 books in the Dark Series, which I’ve written for more than fifteen years, it’s important to me to find a way to keep things fresh, to keep the books evolving in some way, but all the while making certain not to betray my established mythology or cheat the readers who’ve been with the series since the beginning. Dark Legacy is one of those milestones for me and for this series where we expand the storyline, expand the mythology, but also embrace all that’s come before it. I always knew, from the very beginning, that we’d end up back in the United States. So much of what I wanted for this series has come about and I’m excited that Dark Legacy furthers my original ideas for the series.

In the beginning of the series the main focus was on the near-extinction of the Carpathian race and the great villains were vampires and a human society that wanted to kill vampires and Carpathians alike. There was a big mystery surrounding why female children weren’t surviving. In the first book, Dark Prince, we learn that lifemates, the other half of a Carpathian male’s soul that keeps him from turning vampire, can be humans who have some psychic talent.

I knew my world building would take us into more of a fantasy element by introducing mages and dragons. For me, mages were always part of the Carpathian mythology. It just took a while for me to work them into the series. We find that one particular evil mage had been trying to further his own line and make himself immortal by using the Carpathians and the vampires for his own purposes.

The mages are a special favorite of mine and I’ve continued to include them in the series. Dark Legacy circles back to them in a significant way as well.

The next expansion for the series was to introduce the Lycans. My first three-book miniseries within the overall series was Dark Lycan, Dark Wolf and Dark Blood, which addressed the Carpathians and Lycans.

After that I spent time in the Carpathian Mountains introducing the ancients at the monastery. These ancients are a furthering of the Carpathian mythology and an expansion of the overall storyline in the series. Dark Legacy’s hero is Dragonmir, one of the “Brotherhood” of ancients from the monastery who came to the United States seeking his lifemate. The ancients were encouraged to find that human women could become lifemates and have left the monastery to seek out that hope for their survival.

In addition to the ancients, we come back to the United States in Dark Legacy and we’re introduced to Tariq, who is an ancient himself. More importantly though, he has sworn fealty to Mikhail, the current Prince of the Carpathians, and has proven himself invaluable to the Prince on many levels. There are reasons that the Prince decides to make Tariq the new leader of Carpathians in the United States and some of that is addressed in Dark Legacy, though some remains a mystery, and will be revealed in time.

With the addition of the “New Guard” made of ancients who’ve not sworn fealty to Mikhail, and with good reasons that have not been revealed yet, with Tariq and his stronghold in the United States, we will be introduced to new villains, and a new kind of villain in Dark Legacy.

Part of this evolution of the story has to do with technology and how vampires embraced it before Carpathians even thought to. As we learn more about the villains and what they’re planning, we come to realize why only Tariq and his New Guard stand a chance of beating them. And we come to realize that there’s a chance that it’s already too late to stop what’s coming.
