Fangtastic Friday: The Captain’s favorite authors
Patricia Briggs, author of several fantasy novels and most currently turning out Urban Fantasy starring Mercy Thompson, Volkswagen mechanic and coyote shifter (Mercy Thompson series) and Paranormal Romance with Charles and Anna Cornick, werewolves of the Aspen Creek, Montana pack (Alpha and Omega series). Ms. Briggs’ books fall into my category of must-owns and will-be-read-repeatedly’s. She has created a rich world, and doesn’t violate the rules of that world even when the consequences are harsh and rather, well, horrible, for the characters. Each novel has been a thrill ride: fun, unexpected, awesome fleshed out characters, mysteries to solve, romance, and hot alpha males that don’t overwhelm their ladies. The female protagonists in these series are so damn likable and relateable that you’re cheering and crying for them at every twist and turn of the plot (as in “No, Mercy! Don’t! Aack! Crap! How the HELL is she going to get out of this!” or “Anna, that’s a frickin’ bad idea babe. I know you’re uber tough and all, but please don’t do this to me!”). The characters never feel like they’ve become stagnant and the mythos continues to grow. Just to give you a taste of the characters/monsters you will enocunter : vampires, fae, werewolves, Native American legends, demons……
Add her to your TBR list today. But get your hands on every book, because you won’t be able to stop with just one. And that’s the Captain’s promise. 🙂
Keri Arthur, is an Aussie with a wicked sense of humor and prolific writing ability. The Riley Jensen series starring well, duh, Riley Jensen (half werewolf, half vampire, all hot and smexy lady) is not to be missed for UF fans. The Smex Beam is in full on automatic weapons mode in these books (9 in all) and you will enjoy and bookmark them all. In Riley’s world, sex is to be celebrated. Often. With joyful abandon. And the men in her life are hot, sexy as hell, and only too willing to oblige. Now, don’t go thinking its all sex, cause it isn’t. There’s a solid believable world built around this character with tons of action and mystery to boot. Ms. Arthur has a new series starting starring a secondary character from the Riley novels called the Dark Angels series and I can’t wait to get my hands on them!
I love the Mercy Thompson series and the Alpha and Omega series too. My two favorite characters are Bran and Samuel. It kills me that they’re both secondary characters. My hope is that one day Briggs starts another series that features Bran or Samuel as the main character. I really never get tired of visiting the world she’s created.
Hey there! I’m glad to see you back! I agree about Bran and Samuel. I’d love to know more about their personal histories. Have you ever checked out her forum? She’s got pages devoted to the characters that give a bit more background on them and how the packs and seethe work. It’s almost as much fun as reading the books.
I think there may be some developments for Bran in his marriage now that Anna is in residence in the pack. It’s been alluded to. His wife isn’t very likable, but I feel for her. She’s in a tough spot.
And I agree, the world never gets old, I can reread right from the beginning, and I still enjoy the heck out of Mercy et al.
I have the full collection of Briggs’ works. All of her early books-The Hob’s Bargain, When Demon’s Walk, Raven’s Strike, Dragon’s Blood, etc are all terrific stories I book mark and reread often.
Hi Gem! Thanks for your comment. I haven’t gotten to the fantasy stories- yet. 🙂 My TBR pile just keeps getting bigger and bigger!
I am a big fan of fantasy though, have you ever read any of Kristen Britain’s Green Rider books? There’s four published and they are just fantastic. Really wonderful series. My only complaint is that they are published really really far apart. Ms. Britain is a slow writer, but the quality is so high, that I forgive her. lol. If you haven’t checked them out, I highly recommend them.
LOL!! Does it figure we like the same authors! I adore both of these fantastic authors. They are both on my auto list.
Hey, thanks for stopping by and commenting. I figure that awesome calls to awesome, so, of course we’d like the same authors. I also have an abiding love for Kim Harrison, the Fever Series (ooohhh Barrons!), the BDB, Kelley Armstrong,…you name it, if I haven’t read it yet, its probably on my TBR list.
DVK has expanded my horizons a bit. She’s really good at recommending new series and books.
I may do another post on my favorites. This post was going to be longer but I got distracted by hot men in kilts. *waggles eyebrows* Keep an eye out for that post later this month. The picture at the top is one of the hottest men I have ever seen. (I could have done more on this post but I got distracted by all those lovely, sexy pictures. If this site wasn’t PG, there would definitely be some skin showing.. 😉 )
