Review Necro: The Vampire Queen’s Servant & The Mark of the Vampire Queen by Joey Hill

Welcome to the first ever GraveTells Review Necro!

I know what you’re thinking… “DVK, what the heck is a ‘review necro’? It sounds weird and gross!”.  First, I promise it’s not weird OR gross!  Second, before I tell you, I need to briefly digress…

Do you know what “GraveTells” means, where it came from?  A cyber-cookie for the first to figure it out and comment about it.  *grin*  Read my bio if you need some help.  If that doesn’t get you thinking about what the site name infers, this new feature is along those very same lines…

If you’ve ever spent time on online message boards and forums, you might have seen the term “thread necro”, referring to when a poster “bumps” an old (“dead”) thread by making a new comment in it.  People refer to it as a “thread necro” because that poster is bringing the post “back from the dead”, or rescuing it from the bowels of thread heaven, where old threads go to wither and be forgotten about.  This new feature on GT is to help “bump” some of our older reviews for our newer readers.  We review a LOT of books, so it can be easy to become intimidated or get lost by following links in the “if you like” sections.  This way, we get to share some of our old favorites with you!

Our very first Review Necro is …

From our July 2011 archives, this is a double review on the first two books in Joey Hill’s Vampire Queen series.  They were reviewed together because the stories are so interwoven that they’re basically one book, split in half.  Both reviews scored very high, with The Vampire Queen’s Servant (#1) earning a 4.5/5 and The Mark of the Vampire Queen (#2) winning a perfect 5/5 Gold Heart Award.  From our review…

Jacob’s journey toward full human servant is both tender and traumatic.  During the first novel, it is difficult to comprehend why Lyssa treats him as she does, but when all is finally revealed, it makes your heart break just a little for the both of them.  Of course, that’s when you’re not taking cold showers or jumping your significant other from the sheer HEAT of their chemistry.  If those book covers at the top of this post make you raise your eyebrows, well hang on to your granny panties sister cuz you ain’t seen nothin’ yet!  The Mark of the Vampire Queen has one of the hands-down-hottest scenes in a book I have ever read, eclipsing even One Foot in the Grave‘s infamous Chapter 32.  The scenes in The Vampire Queen’s Servant are no slouch either.  Ms. Hill delivers such beautiful imagery, heart-touching tenderness and discovery, amidst the visceral, intense sexual spectacles.

These stories are the perfect blend of erotica and paranormal romance, tying together a soul-deep love story and a physical connection with more sparks than a ribbon of Black Cats on the 4th.  These books pack some serious punch, so this is not for the sheltered or for readers easily offended by creative public sexual displays designed around group & bondage situations!  Sound interesting yet?  It’s positively scandalous and I DARE you to read this series!!

Still need more incentive to check out these books?  The Author Mistress herself, Ms. Joey Hill, will be treating us to a very special joint interview with characters from the whole series, set in Atlantis, the BDSM nightclub where books 5 and 6 take place. This is a unique interview written just for GraveTells (in our signature casual, conversational style) and I’m SUPER stoked!  Ms. Hill is giving away a signed copy of one of her books to one lucky commenter (winner’s choice).  As a previous winner of one of these signed books, I am really excited to be able to offer this to you guys.  The best part?  This will be our Valentine’s Day post!

Valentines Day at GraveTells just got a whole lot steamier… *wiggles eyebrows*  So go, read, get caught up!  Then you can join us and Ms. Hill on February 14 and meet all of these amazing characters from the kick-ass Vampire Queen Series.  Click on the book cover links above to read the review, or click here…

If you thought I was kidding about keeping your S.O. (or, erm, toys) nearby when you read these… I WAS SO NOT.  *grin*

    This series sounds hot and right up my alley (for adults). Thanks for re-posting! I haven’t read this author’s work yet. I’m off to goodreads to add to my reading list. Thank you for the giveaway chance! 😉

      If you like steamy and dominating, you’re gonna LOVE this series! I’m actually a little (ok, a lot) obsessed with it, on multiple levels. How can ALL the men in this series be SO sexy?! Ugh. Joey Hill is a master. For realz! *grin*

    Oh my goodness, those covers are making me sweat. How did this go unnoticed by me, I am very ashamed LOL! But seriously, BDSM is an unexplored category for me which is probably why I haven’t started this. I am not a prude, but I am a good old Southern girl, I must be gentle LMAO! I am so marking my calendar for this. I am going to find these and get caught up with you guys. Thank you so much for this awesome post. This series sounds mouthwatering 🙂

      It is indeed mouthwatering! I’m not really into hardcore BDSM with the spanking and such, but I do like sexual bondage and submission and this series has this in spades. One of the things about BDSM that I’ve had trouble understanding and relating to is the desire to submit and call someone Master. The Vampire Queen series really gets you into the heads of the servants so you “get” it better than any other book I’ve ever read on the genre. It’s absolutely amazing.

    I like the idea of the Review Necro since I have only been following since last fall and have only been reading this genre since last spring.

    This is a wow- sounding series. I have only read a few BDSM books and there are aspects that I still don’t understand. But I’m a curious one- (-;

    Thanks for the share!

      The first novel takes a little time to get into. It feels slow (well to me at least – I was like “where’s the sex?!” and wanted to flip through) but stick with it! The Vampire Queen universe is extensive and there’s a lot of setup that has to be done in the first book. It really starts to pick up around the middle of book one, and is a whirlwind of a ride after that. You may as well buy both book 1 and book 2 at the same time, because you’re not going to want to wait after you finish The Vampire Queen’s Servant!
