Review: Heart of the Incubus (Demons of Infernum #3.5, novella) by Rosalie Lario

by davincikittieJanuary 22, 2012

TLDR recap:

What are the chances of a playboy Incubus, who can have his choice of multiple lovers (sometimes all at once) settling for a geeky American scientist like Genevieve Russell? Cresso Taylor has known for a while that he’s in love with the beautiful, classy, and smart scientist, but the only vibes he gets from her are “leave me alone”. Gen and Cresso soon find they have bigger problems than her apparent dislike of him and his soul-deep need to be with her, when a stalker begins leaving macabre packages and letters at her home and office.  Heart of the Incubus is a Recommended read!

Thoughts:

Genevieve Taylor is definitely the biggest challenge Cresso has faced in, well, ever.  Thanks to the Incubus allure that usually captivates any woman who looks his way, Gen’s animosity is an unusual circumstance and he can’t quite figure out how to deal with it without pushing her further away. Unfortunately for Genevieve (or fortunately, if you’re every other woman wanting to take her place!), Cresso’s heart is set and he’s not about to let her slip away.

Gen has issues of her own, stemming from a troubled past that left her devastated. Since a man with a pretty face, a playboy like Cresso, was the reason behind the hurt, the last person Gen will let herself trust is a demon who needs sex to survive, and as much as she’s attracted to him, she won’t be anyone’s one night stand.

Heart of the Incubus starts of a little slower than the other books in this series and initially the only familiar character is Cresso, who made appearances in Blood of the Demon (#1) and Touch of the Angel (#3). A good deal of the story is split between Cresso trying to get closer to Genevieve so he can protect her, and their ongoing search to find the sicko that continues to terrorize her.  When some old friends come into town unexpectedly, things finally start to heat up between Cresso and Genevieve, and the story really takes off.

I always enjoy seeing the brothers and their ladies, especially Taeg and Maya. She’s my hero…ine! *grin* I had a harder time getting into this book than the previous three full-length novels, I think partially because the story was largely removed from the brothers and I look forward to seeing their interactions and sibling jibes at each other.  I think the other factor was the length.  It’s just hard to fit everything into 30,000 words, especially when you have to invest in development of multiple new characters AND new locations.  Also, stalkers really creep me out.  I can’t handle the psychology behind it, so that threw me for a little bit of a loop!

Memorable quotes:

Incubus or not, he’d take any woman’s breath away…

Cresso Taylor. Gifted Scientist. Breathtakingly gorgeous incubus. Unrepentant playboy.

More t-shirt shenanigans…

“I love terrorizing the stuffy Brits who work (at the Four Seasons).” Taeg shot him a grin. “They never know quite what to make of my t-shirts.”

Cresso couldn’t fault them for that one. The one Taeg wore now said HOLD MY BEER WHILE I SNOG YOUR GIRLFRIEND.

Guess we can’t all be Taeg fangirls. More for me… and Maya… damnit! *grin*

By the time Cresso arrived with his friend, a handsome demon named Taeg who had terrible taste in T-shirts, she’d found she liked the assertive, confident Maya.

If you liked Heart of the Incubus…

If you enjoyed Heart of the Incubus and haven’t yet read the rest of the series, most definitely check out the entire Demons of Infernum series (starting with Blood of the Demon).

You might also like The Psy-Changeling series (starting with Slave to Sensation) by Nalini Singh.  Psy are not supposed to feel emotion, yet somehow Sasha is drawn to the sexy and dangerous Darkriver shapeshifter alpha Lucas.  Their story takes place against all odds, tracking a stalker, circumventing the militant Psy council, and accepting things about themselves they never thought possible.  If you haven’t heard of this incredible series by Ms. Singh, you absolutely must check it out.

Final thoughts:

I can’t say I liked Heart of the Incubus as much as the first three in the series, but I did enjoy it and it starts a story arc (regarding Taeg & Maya) I think might come into play in Dagan’s book, the conclusion to the series. I did like Cresso and Genevieve and enjoyed their yummy chemistry as a couple. I wasn’t as into the storyline for this one, it being creepier and less supernatural than the others, but the tension (both sexual and psychological) was well crafted.

Heart of the Incubus is a Recommended read for fans of the Demons of Infernum series, and for those wanting a quick sip to get a feel for Ms. Lario’s stellar work.

Thanks for the post. I usually skip the novellas in a series but I won’t be skipping this one. I’d love to see how an incubus settles down.
