Review: Blood of the Demon (Demons of Infernum #1) by Rosalie Lario

by davincikittieJanuary 10, 2012

TLDR recap:

Tasked with stopping their father from finding the Book of the Dead and taking over the human world, Keegan and his 3 half-demon brothers must keep that power out of their father’s hands at any cost, even if it means eliminating the human heir to the spell – the only person alive who can cast it.  Things aren’t so simple though, after Keegan meets Brynn.  How can he destroy something that has become so precious to him?  Is he willing to forsake his brothers and his mission to save the life of the love he never thought he’d have?  Rosalie Lario’s Blood of the Demon is a GraveTells “must-read”!

*** This review is SPOILER-FREE! Read on with confidence! ***

Having read books 2 (Mark of the Sylph) and 3 (Touch of the Angel) in the series first (which, while you won’t miss anything important, I don’t recommend since it spoils the story line), I wasn’t initially quite as enchanted with Keegan and Brynn’s story as with the later ones, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it even knowing pretty much everything that was going to happen. As I read deeper into the book, I became as involved in what was happening as if it was all new to me. It was bittersweet seeing the brothers at odds with each other and witnessing the events unfold that will eventually lead to Taeg’s self-recrimination and sacrifice in Mark of the Sylph. Taeg being my favorite brother, it fun to see him as a bachelor, and his trademark tshirts were (as usual) immensely entertaining.

This book has more interaction between the brothers (and Cresso, star of the upcoming novella Heart of the Incubus) than the others in the series and I enjoyed getting to see them together during their downtime. There’s something about the way a man acts around just the guys that is edgy and sexy. They don’t hold back and you get to see them as they really are instead of just being on their better behavior.

These brothers are individually unique in their personalities and abilities, but united in their drive to stop their tyrant father and in their solidarity as brothers who have survived a brutal childhood and rough existence up until now.

Keegan and Brynn’s “alone time” steamed up the screen of my new tablet. Their chemistry is strong and I loved seeing Keegan’s sexual dominance come out to play, as well as Brynn’s strength and saucy reciprocation.  Can you really get much sexier than a dragon shifter who can toast the bad guys with just his super-flame-breath?  Maybe, but it’d be a tall order (extra crispy please! *giggle*)!

Memorable quotes:

Everybody needs a hero… or 4

Superheroes. That was what she’d called them yesterday, and obviously she hadn’t been far off. Her own little band of superheroes. Respect and admiration for them swelled up inside her. These guys kicked major ass.

Just to set the record straight…

“Demons aren’t evil creatures from Hell.”

Brynn blinked at him. “They aren’t?”

“There is no Hell. At least not as far as I know.”

She furrowed her brows. “Well then, what are they?”

“Demons are… well they’re a different race. To be specific, they’re a race of beings from a world that exists in another point of space.”

We’re off to see the wizard!

“You were sent to Earth? So, how are you supposed to have gotten here? Through a tornado?”

“You know, like Dorothy? Wizard of Oz?”

Straight-faced, he said, “I’ve never met this wizard.”

Why the brothers should open a t-shirt shop…

“What do we have here?” she asked, her voice a sexy rumble in her throat. The hungry once-over she gave him put him in mind of a predator spotting its prey. Her gaze lingered on the words stamped across his T-shirt: Orgasm Donor. Lips curving into a slow smile, she glanced back up at him. “I’ll take three.”

Taeg shrugged and kicked his feet off the coffee table, swiveling his head in Keegan’s direction. He was wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the words Why Do Today What You Can Put Off Until Tomorrow?

A universal truth…

“Are you sure this will work?” Doubt and concern colored Ronin’s tone as he paced back and forth between Taeg and Dagan. “I mean, isn’t it a little obvious, sending horny chicks to the flying demons and to the ground demons all at the same time?”

“Of course it’s obvious,” Taeg said. “And of course it’ll work. There’s nothing like a smoking-hot, horny chick to make a guy’s big brain checkout and his little brain take charge. As Dagan can attest with that haknasa demon that got him the other night. Isn’t that right, baby bro?”

If you liked Blood of the Demon of the Demons of Infernum series…

If you enjoyed Blood of the Demon, you’ll almost certainly enjoy Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series.  Like the brothers, Bones has wit and skillz, and never backs down from a challenge, even when it seems suicidal… and he’ll do anything to protect his love, Cat.  You might also enjoy the Bayou Gavotte series by Barabara Monajem (see our review of #2 in the series, Tastes Of Love & Evil).  The vamps are witty, the heroes are sexy-yet-tortured, and the setting is vibrant.

Final thoughts:

Blood of the Demon is an exciting read, filled with hunky half-demons, steamy (and original!) sex scenes, awesome supernatural abilities, a heart-warming love story, and of course zombies. The starter novel for the witty, sexy, Demons of Infernum series (Honorable Mention for 2011 GraveTells Series of the Year), Blood of the Demon is a GraveTells Must Read!

Blood of the Demon was recently named as one of GraveTells “Top 5 Books of 2011 You Absolutely MUST Read!” and author Rosalie Lario won our 2011 Debut Author of the Year award.  If you haven’t checked out this series yet, go go go and start reading!  The final book releases in March, so you have just enough time to read the first four and catch Dagan’s story when it’s hot off the presses.  =)

This series is on my to-reads wish-list. I’m hoping soon I can get to read them. Thanks for posting! Great review. 🙂

I can imagine if you read the others first then this one you wouldn’t love it as much. I read them in order and thought this one was great but the others did get better and better. I think Taegs story is my favorite. And I can not wait for Dagans.

Cresso’s story is up next (should have the review up in a week or two). I’m super-stoked for Dagan’s. Being part siren, it has serious promise to be a steamy one. And with Ronin’s sister being his girl, ooooo the conflict!

I’ve never read the series at all but after reading this review I just finished downloading ‘Blood of the Demon’ for Kindle! I’ll read it after I’ve finished ‘Her fallen’ series by Felicity Heaton 😀

I just love some of those quotes. You always pick such good ones. I have the series on my wish list, but I need to get my TBR pile under control before I start any new series.

But this is a definite series read!
