Being an advice columnist comes easy to Sophie. She’s always had the drive to help people and is content with saving the world, one person at a time. A past full of familial death and loss has caused Sophie to place herself in a protective bubble with no hope of finding love again. With no risks being taken, no loss can be experienced. Then she meets Marek, a man that is the embodiment of the word, “risk.”

Striking in appearance, Marek exudes danger, but underneath it all is the air of a tortured soul looking for redemption, but resigned to damnation. The entirety of his being cries for help and calls to Sophie’s innate altruism. Marek begins to unlock the barrier of protection Sophie has erected. But after a chance murderous encounter, Marek is revealed for the predator he truly is.

Following her heart and piqued curiosity, Marek leads Sophie into an unbelievable world full of the mortal danger only found in fairytales. Just as she’s finally allowed herself to let go and love again, Sophie’s thrust into a dangerous battle for everything she’s fought to protect herself against and the soul of the man she can longer live without.

Bleeding Hearts was a surprisingly great read and is an awesome different take on vampires that’s refreshing. Krafton tells an emotionally gripping story that at times deceivingly reads like a light, airy beach read one second, only to surprise you with its depth the next. “Couldn’t put it down,” is not even close to the thrall Krafton’s story cast over me; more like forcing myself to go to bed at 5 am because I had to sleep or reading on the way to the mailbox because I couldn’t part with the pages for those few moments. If you don’t pick up this book, you’ll be sorely missing out!

Memorable Quotes:

This is so me…

Barbara’s voice interrupted my reverie. “What did you say he did for a living? A professor or something?”
“Uh, no.” I tapped my front teeth with a fingernail as I tried to remember. “He sort of explained but I didn’t quite follow.” Actually, I hadn’t followed at all because I’d been incredibly distracted at the time. The conversation went something along the lines of:
“I am in business with my family. We control several local enterprises, as well as others in the country and abroad. Yadda yadda…” Wow. Look at those eyes. I mean, did you ever see a shade of green like that? They practically glow. “Yadda yadda… and unfortunately the role of ambassador usually falls to me. It is no terrible thing, as I am fortunately blessed with yadda yadda…” Martha Stewart would kill to get her hands on paint that color, I bet. What would she call it? Spring? Emerald? And those lashes. Oof! “…yadda yadda difficulties when dealing with the executive boards of other… interests… but such is the nature of politics.”
So, no, I hadn’t caught the whole thing. Hell if I told Barbara that part, though. I tried my best to look responsible in front of her and that bit would totally have blown my cover.

*clicks heels* There’s no place like home…

“That guy on the roof. The fall off the roof that should of killed us. The teeth a-and the way you… you…” My voice failed as I remembered. I didn’t want to remember. It would be real if I could remember. “What could you possibly say?”
He hunched his shoulders, staring down at his hands for a long while. When he finally spoke, his voice was quiet and solemn and final.
When he spoke, I heard some invisible door inside my head slam shut, separating me from whatever had been my life.
Without looking up, Marek uttered one word.

Young wisdom from an old soul…

“Your mind, the voice of reason, is the counter-balance. When you find a good match, both your heart and mind will approve, because you’ll have found the one who fits both. Don’t despair. Love is confusing but it will make sense once you find the mate to your body and soul. Your heart and mind will be in accord. That’s why true love gives you such a sense of wholeness, of being complete. It’s because you can honestly say, with every ounce of your being, yes.”
“Wow.” One of the girls whispered as she peered into my eyes. “That’s amazing.”
“Thank you, Sophie.” Tess squeezed my hand. “I know you’re right. I know what I have to do. It’s just… so hard.”
“I know,” I replied. “It’s love that makes it so hard. If it wasn’t love, it wouldn’t hurt when you got it wrong. Then again, it wouldn’t feel so good when you get it right.”
She smiled, and when I looked in her eyes, I saw a shimmer of light within the DV glow. It was hope.

If you liked Bleeding Hearts…

If you enjoyed Bleeding Hearts and are looking for more paranormal tales full of love, mind-bending action, and danger, don’t miss Lynda Hilburn’s The Vampire Shrink, a memorable story of psychologist who didn’t believe in vampires and then fell in love with one.

Final Thoughts:

Bleeding Hearts was simply fabulous! Though the beginning is a little slow, the story works to slowly lure and enrapture you into a heart-pounding and gut-wrenching emotional ride that I’m glad I had the privilege to take. Bleeding Hearts is a must-read!

This was my first try at a vampire book and much to my surprise not the blood and gore I thought would be there but a story, yes, an acutal story . Sophie takes on more than she expects when she meets Marek…something so strong she is drawn in and cannot break away from. I thought her down-to-earth character, sarcastic humor and deep feelings made her believable. Marek, a man of mystery…leaves me wanting to learn so much more. I can see life isn’t going to be easy for either.
Can’t wait for book 2 to come out so I can see where the story goes. Great story…awesome story line…kudos to the author.
