Book Tour & Giveaway (US/Int): Getting up close & personal with Henrik of Laura Kaye’s Vampire Warrior Kings series

by davincikittieAugust 4, 2013

Please help us welcome bestselling author Laura Kaye and Taken by the Vampire King’s Henrik!

I’m super excited to be at GraveTells today to celebrate the release of Taken by the Vampire King, a book in my Vampire Warrior Kings series. Taken by the Vampire King is a beauty-and-the-beast story about a dying vampire king and the human woman he thinks can save him. Today, hero and Warrior King of the Northern Vampires Henrik Magnusson agreed to sit down and have a chat with me, so let’s not keep him waiting.

Author Lady: My lord, thank you for your time today.

Henrik: Call me, Henrik, Laura. After all, you created me.

Author Lady: *OMG the way he pronounces my name! Swoon!* Oh, okay. Thanks. So, Henrik, let me start with the most basic question. How are you feeling these days?

Henrik: *Smiles in a way that reveals the tips of his fangs* Better and better, thanks to Kaira.

Author Lady: I’m so glad to hear that. All these months I’ve known about you, I’ve worried for you. And how is Kaira?

Henrik: Kaira is… *he shakes his head as if struggling for words* …everything. There simply aren’t words. But if you ask how she fares, then she is adjusting wonderfully to her new life here.

Author Lady: That’s great to hear. Is she still taking photographs?

Henrik: I could no more keep her from looking to the sky through that lens than separate myself from her. It is her passion.

Author Lady: Has she captured anymore rare auroras on film?

Henrik: No. Not yet. But she will have a very long lifetime to try.

Author Lady: Indeed. And how is she getting along with Jakob and the rest of your warriors?

Henrik: She won them all over the moment they saw her in that hospital room. They adore her and revere her as their queen, as is right. And she keeps them all in line, as she did that first day.

Author Lady: *snickers* I just bet she does. So, now that one of the warrior kings has died, what’s going on in the war with the Soul Eaters?

Henrik: *expression darkens* It escalates. A new king will be selected in the East, but as my fallen brethren had no chosen successor, it will take time. We are all on high alert. But we’ve seen dire times before. The war is ancient, and it will not end any time soon. But we will continue to fight.

Author Lady: Now that the Polar Night has ended in Norway, will you have less problems with Soul Eaters where you live?

Henrik: *nods* Yes. Their presence and arrogance is always worse during the darkness of winter. Now, with the return of the sun, their ability to be out limits their movements, just as it does for us. So they tend to disperse to move populated areas. It is one small blessing the sun bestows on my kind—not to mention humankind—here.

Author Lady: Good. That’s good. Oh! I can’t believe I didn’t think to ask. Did Kaira win the photography competition?

Henrik: *his grin is immediate* Of course she did. How could you doubt?

Author Lady: Well, I didn’t, really—

Henrik: And not only did she win, but her photographs will be printed in a travel magazine this spring.

strong>Author Lady: That is wonderful!

Henrik: It is recognition much deserved. She has an uncanny ability to see more than what appears to be there.

Author Lady: *realizing he’s not just talking about the aurora* Yes, yes she does.

Henrik: Speaking of Kaira, I really should be getting back.

Author Lady: Of course. Tell her I said, “Hello.”

Henrik: *nods and rises to his feet. I rise too, and have to crane my neck back to meet his bright blue eyes. Geez, he’s enormous. He grasps and lifts my hand, then presses a kiss to the back. I gasp at the feel of his lips, knowing what’s right behind them* Until we meet again.

Author Lady: *in a breathy voice* Yes. Until… *nearly swoons as his almost immediate disappearance*

Taken by the Vampire King

Vampire Warrior Kings #3

Henrik Magnusson is supposed to be immortal, but a mysterious ailment leaves the vampire king near death, and not even the blood of the Proffered, human virgins trained to serve the elite, can sustain him. Then he rescues a beautiful young woman from his enemies, and is filled with blood lust and desire he hasn’t felt for centuries.

Photographer Kaira Sorenson’s life takes a nightmare turn when she’s attacked by blood-thirsty creatures and saved by a vampire. She should be afraid of Henrik, but she can’t deny her intense attraction to this regal, enigmatic being nor the fact that her blood may be his only salvation. Henrik’s back slammed against a brick wall, the darkness of the narrow alley sheltering their trio from the tourists thronging Tromsø’s streets.

Lars stood at the entrance, making sure no one developed an unhealthy curiosity.

Jakob got right up in Henrik’s face, forearm pressing into the king’s chest. “What happened?”

He shook his head, swallowing thickly, his hunger burning so intensely it was almost a living thing within him. “Wanted her,” he rasped. It hadn’t been a decision. There wasn’t anything rational or conscious about it. From the first moment she’d approached him, he was awash in her appealing scent, like the smoky berries of a vintage wine or the rich bite of an aged, dignified whiskey.

“Wanted her how?”

“I wanted her.” He knocked his head against the brick. Even now, he couldn’t shake the image of the vein’s rhythmic dance along her slender neck or of the luscious dip of her cleavage, both displayed so invitingly by her upswept hair. His fangs throbbed with a want and a need he couldn’t remember feeling in ages. Not to mention the aching hard-on between his legs.

“Straight out no-shit bloodlust?” Something like hope sounded in the warrior’s deep voice.

“Ja.” Henrik heaved a deep breath of cold January air as his imagination unhelpfully replayed how it would’ve gone down. Tearing the gown from her trim body. Holding her curves in his hands. Bearing her up against the wall. Sinking his fangs and his cock in deep until every dark, needy part of him was sated.

“I’ll get her.” Jakob turned away.

The king slammed his hand down on his brother’s shoulder and gripped hard. “Nei.”

“You want her. You need her.”

“I’ll kill her.”

Because he wouldn’t be able to stop.

Once he got a taste, something base and instinctual told him he wouldn’t be able to make himself stop. He’d been so close to the edge of his restraint in the gallery. Only the sound of her voice had pulled him back from the brink.

All he’d wanted was a night out of their mountain citadel, away from the looming promise of death. He thought the jovial atmosphere of the festival would distract him from all that was to come. Instead, it had thrown it right in his face. Christ, he was a catastrophe waiting to happen, already more beast than man. He shook his head again. “I’ll fucking kill her,” he rasped.

“You won’t.”

Acid washed through his gut. “You willing to risk an innocent woman’s life—or her soul—to see which of us is right? I’m not.” He shuddered, the danger of becoming like his evil enemies one of his greatest fears. “Leave her be. I’ll not have it any other way.”

What made you want to write Taken by the Vampire King? It sounds really good

    • August 5, 2013 at 5:47 am

I always knew I’d write this book since it’s part of a series, but the ideas for it came from my total fascination with the northern lights. And I always just knew Henrik was dying. The first line of the book had been in my head for months and months before I could sit down and finally write it! 🙂

When you finish this series will you consider writing about another vampire line or go in a diferent paranormal direction?

    • August 5, 2013 at 3:37 pm

Vampires are my favorite, so I will always come back to them! 🙂 But I have a truly awesome series idea that combines paranormal with military, so that’s on the back burner somewhere too! 🙂

For Laura, what do you think is so appealing about vampires?

    • August 5, 2013 at 3:45 pm

OMG! Their fangs – dark and dangerous and inhuman and powerful. Their immortality – both powerful and also a little sad, because it means they’ve lost everyone they once loved. The powers – a fascinating aphrodisiac! They’re the total bad boys of the paranormal world! *grins*

I would love to spend time in Laura’s head. She comes up with the sexiest heroes. Usually an author will throw in a lead that makes me go “meh”, but Laura knocks it out of the park each and every time. Plus she gives them great stories to go with all the alpha sexiness.

Do you have your next book in the series plotted out? Where will the next be set in? I can’t wait to read this book.

    • August 5, 2013 at 3:47 pm

Yes, mostly! As much as I ever plot, anyway. I know who the characters are, where it’s set (southeastern Europe is all I’ll say for now!), and the broad strokes of what will happen!

I love character interviews thank you for sharing your chat with us! You were not the only one swooning by the end of that interview Laura 😀
My question is for Henrik (love that name) “How would you describe yourself?” and my question for Laura “Where did the name Henrik for your main character come from?”
Thank you for the giveaway 🙂

    • August 5, 2013 at 3:52 pm

From Henrik: “Jakob would say I’m a pain in the ass. He’s probably right. I’m also a male in love, with a woman and with life – for the first time in way too long. And I am king.”

From Laura: I’ve always loved the name Henry but it’s not particularly alpha so I’ve never really considered using it as a lead hero’s name. However, the Nordic version of the name is way alpha with the hard ending, plus historically there were a lot of royal Henrik Magnussons along the way…
