Book Spotlight and Giveaway (US/Int): A Touch of Darkness (Key, #1) by Tina Moss and Yelena Casale
Cassie’s working for a tightwad boss at a pretentious NYC diner, dealing with paralyzing pain that doctors can’t diagnose, and trying to hide her hands that glow purple whenever she …well, whenever.
So, when a mysterious stranger walks out of her dreams and into her life to spout some nonsense about her being a mythical creature, she chalks it up to one more crazy thing to add to her it’s-a-crappy-life list. Yet, when the stranger’s predictions start to come true, she discovers a world that could shake up her humdrum existence.

Yelena and I wanted a strong, tough heroine that could truly hold her own. Cassie fit the bill perfectly and demonstrates that fieriness in the club scene here.
-Tina
As they got out of the cab and walked to the front door, a narrow alleyway to the side of the building caught Cassie’s attention. She paused and peered in. It was impossible to see down, but she’d bet anything there was an emergency exit for the club somewhere within the darkness. Escape plan – check. Now, I just need an excuse. But before she could think of one, her friend’s voice interrupted her scheming.
“Come on, Cas, it’ll be fine.” Zoey led the way into the club, past the cliché burly bouncer who nodded to Zoey like he knew her. Considering how much she went out, he probably did.
Blaring music hit them full force. The house beats intermingled with rock metal, the noise so loud identifying the song playing became impossible. Cassie could feel the pounding of bass drums deep in her chest. The lights dimmed to create a dark mysterious mood. The crimson neon signs pointing out the bar area and the restrooms were the sole bright spots in the club.
“What’s the name of this place again?” Cassie said struggling to be heard over the racket.
“What?” Zoey cupped a hand around her ear. Cassie repeated the question. “Oh. It’s ‘Crimson’. Great, isn’t it?”
“Yeah.” Cassie plastered on that happy face and tried to sound enthused. “Great.”
Zoey yelled what sounded like, “Be right back,” and disappeared through the mass of moving bodies. Cassie scanned the area and spotted an empty corner toward the back of the club. She made a beeline for the spot. Just as she was about to have a little peace, a guy grabbed her wrist and spun her around.
“Hey. Come dance with me, baby.” The man’s breath reeked of alcohol. His disheveled sweaty hair spilled forth from a ponytail. A pair of tattered jeans, dirty construction boots, and “More beer here” t-shirt pegged him as trouble.
“No, thanks.” Cassie tugged her hand away from his grip. She took a pointed step back to put more space between her and the stranger. His muddy blue eyes glared at her with menace.
“That’s how it gonna be, huh?” The man slurred his words and made a grab for her again. She sidestepped him and watched as he stumbled forward. When he regained his balance, he turned and hissed.
Cassie braced one foot forward and felt the floor beneath her feet. It’d been a rough couple of weeks, and if she got the chance to take out her frustration on this moron, she’d welcome the challenge.
The man laughed at her. “Whatcha gonna do?” He lunged again, trying to circle her waist.
She out maneuvered him. With her leg extended to one side, she used his body weight and forward motion to propel him to the ground. The jerkoff fell head over heels for her – literally. He laid flat on his back in a heap as his eyes stared at the ceiling.
A martial artist for many years but a pacifist by nature, she tried to keep the grin off her face. She failed. “Perfect.”

I like that Cassie is the type of female character who can take care of herself, but the excerpt gave me no clue (I don’t think) of what type of mythological character.
