Please help me welcome author Mercy Celeste and the sexy men of the Southern Scrimmage series for a very special interview…

Mercy: We’re all gathered in my cozy sun room enjoying the nice almost spring weather and talking about the upcoming football season and what to expect in book four. The guys get upset when they don’t have a say in their story so this is their quarterly bitch session…er, plotting session. This winter has been pretty harsh here on the Gulf Coast, and we’re all enjoying the sun after the freak snow storms (which really happened this year) Levi is wearing camouflage cargo shorts and a teal muscle tank top with matching Chucks, his tattoo has expanded past his elbow now and he’s wearing earrings and eyeliner. He’s growing his hair out. The rest of the guys have already ribbed him for his choice of interview attire as they came dressed appropriately in jeans and long sleeve t-shirts. We’re all really anxious, especially me, I’ve never participated in an interview like this before and they know it. So hi and thank you for having me. I hope everyone is having a nice Valentine’s Day.

@Mercy: I understand that Levi’s character grew out of Bo’s struggle in Six Ways, but he has since become an integral component to many of the storylines and character relationships since then. Did his role expand more than you expected? He almost seems like the central character now, even in Offside Chance, where the focus is on Jude and Will. What are your thoughts on this?

“In 6 I mentioned the quarterback Brody a couple of times as a bit of a foil for Bo. He’d have worked very closely with the QB and would have had an almost brother like relationship with him. I had Bo pick on him a bit by saying Dylan was the best QB he’d ever played with, but really that was the extent of Levi’s character in 6. He didn’t even have a first name. Just the phantom QB. The idea to have a sequel didn’t come to me until after I’d actually written the first chapter of Sidelined. I realized then that I wanted to tell some of the backstory in those two missing years but didn’t want to do it from either Bo or Dylan’s POV. I needed an outsider to tell that time. We just went back a bit farther than I meant to. Which made sense to me. How did Bo really pull through those first few weeks? What did the team think, how did they react? So with the birth of Levi Brody, I did make him the unintentional center of this series. I believe the series revolves around Bo, Levi, and now Will. With Levi being the link the binds them all together.”

@Mercy: Even though Offside Chance is about Jude and Will, it’s almost an ensemble piece with the way the character histories all converge. What were some of the challenges you faced while writing this story?

“Besides not throwing the whole thing away and starting over? Honestly, I’ve never written anything like that before. I’m not sure I’ve ever read anything like that either. Most series that change the MCs usually only loosely link the books together, as a friend we’ve never met before, and maybe there will be that one scene where previous MCs are featured as part of the current book. I didn’t want to do that. In my head I have this one story arch and it involves these people and they all play some role in the eventual outcome of the greater story. So the greatest challenge was keeping each character as true to his original character as possible. And show growth. And not mess up time lines AND move all of this forward without leaving any threads dangling. By the end of the book I was a complete basket case.”

@Levi: Just how many differently-colored boas and kilts do you have? Not that I’m complaining… *wink*

“All the colors of the rainbow, plus the Brody clan tartan. I don’t have a boa to match that one…yet.”

Jude interrupts. “We’re Irish not Scottish, we don’t have a clan anything.”

“We’re Scottish, genius, shows how much you paid attention growing up. The spelling was changed after the Highland clearings. Mom used to tell stories her grandmother had told her. But back to the question. I only have four boas, the collection has been exaggerated a tad.”

@Levi, Jude, & Will: What’s next for each of you now that you’re looking at possible changes of career?

Jude: “I can’t speak for the rest of us, but I get to be Will’s girl Friday for awhile. And I just bought a house that was damaged in the flood, so that’s my plan for the next year at least. I’ll decide then if I want to go back into law or sell houses for a living….or just fly to Mexico and lay on a beach somewhere.”

Will: “Contract negotiations are underway as we speak. I’m looking at another two years here in New Orleans if everything works out in my favor. I’m going to have to take a pay cut, because they’re bringing in another quarterback and that damned salary cap thing–”

Levi interrupts, “yeah, that is the stupidest thing the commissioner ever did, forcing salary caps. That’s why the owners keep going for the rookies, they don’t cost as much. I feel for ya man. I do.”

“I notice you dodged the question, Leviticus. Why can’t you ever answer a direct question?”

“Bite me, Judah.”

“Here we go.” Will pushes Jude into another seat and sits between the brothers. “Next question.”

@Dylan: There was some tension between you and Levi in the club and Levi referred to trying to pick you up a few times. Was that in his Livy persona? When did you realize Levi was Liv, and what exactly is going on with you two?

“Oh, it’s my turn…okay….no, not that I remember, he’s never flirted with me. He’s mostly just pushing my buttons to see if I’ll break. I think he’s projecting his own desire to get me in his bed.”

Levi snorts… “I what now? In your dreams Jarhead.”

“It’s true, Five, you do flirt with him, it’s embarrassing.” Will winces as Levi elbows him in the ribs. “We’ve all been wondering if there wasn’t a little sumpin sumpin going on–”

“No! Oh my god…no. I swear, he’s hot and all but…I like my balls where they are thank you very much.” Levi’s voice hitches up a couple of notches.

“I think he protests too much,” Bo finally breaks his silence.

“Shut up ‘Cephus or I’ll tell them what you did during Mardi Gras your first year on the team.” Levi’s grin turns wicked.

“You wouldn’t dare,” Bo shifts in his seat his face gone pale. He looks at Dylan who is scowling. “Don’t listen to a word he says he’s crazy.”

“Just now noticed that, did you?” Dylan just shakes his head before cracking a smile.

@Levi: Since your very publicized come-out as Livy St. Cinq, have you been able to find more of a balance within your personality? Or do you still feel the need to be one or the other at times?

“People think I’m crazy. It’s been pointed out a time or two that I might have multiple personalities or something else medically wrong with me. I’m just trying to find some common ground between both of my extremes. I think I’m coping. We play ball and I wear the kilt sometimes. I have pink and silver cleats….stuff like that.” Levi replies with his trademark smirk.

@Jude: Levi’s public image has changed a little in the past several months, now being known as Liv and all. How often do people still confuse you with him and does it bother you?

“All the damned time. But it’s mostly the football fans who mistake me for him. Not many pictures of Livy are circulating around. And I’m here in New Orleans while he’s still in Alabama. I can’t walk down the street without someone asking for an autograph.” Jude scowls for a moment. “But it doesn’t bother me much anymore. The people of New Orleans still love him despite the scandals he’s caused, so that’s something right there. And I tell him when a bunch of little kids run by wearing his jersey. I think that helps him too. I didn’t know how tough it would be for him…you know wondering if his legacy was going to be forgotten.”

“Aww, Jude, I didn’t know you cared.” Levi reaches around Will to flick his brother’s ear.

“Keep it up Leviticus and I’ll move all of your bank accounts and not tell you where.”

“You are an evil evil man, Judah Brody.”

“I learned from the best, brother dear,” Jude laughs and ducks a second ear flick.

@Will & Jude: Throughout the start of your relationship, you were both adamant that you are not gay. Now that you’re an exclusive couple, how much have your views changed and do you see yourselves differently?

“Are we a couple?” Jude asks in surprise.

“A couple of what would be my question,” Will lays his arm across the back of Jude’s chair.

@Will & Jude: Are there any particular challenges you’re having to overcome, either individually or as a couple, with your new “together” status?

“There’s that couple word again,” Jude really does seem surprised. “Uh, well, he snores. I didn’t notice it for a while but he snores really loudly.”

“You would snore too if your nose has been broken as many times as mine has,” Will responds rather indignantly.

“Well, you know the cure for that right?”

“I’m sure you’ll enlighten me.”

“Stop putting your face in the way of other people’s fists.” Jude grins.

“More like, their helmets. But yeah that would work.” Will agrees.

“Aww look it’s twu wuv.” Levi cackles from the other side of his friend. “You still notice they avoided the question right? Can’t even get them to admit they might be more than friends with benefits after all this time.”

@Tracy: Now that the news about you and Levi is definitely out, and you’re living and working together in your fairly small home town, have people changed the way they treat you?

Tracy looks startled at the question. “Not to repeat Sunday, but it’s my turn now?” He smiles and seems to relax. “Yeah, the gay thing in a small town isn’t the most pleasant thing I’ve had to deal with. The kids at the school and my fellow teachers, have, for the most part, been awesome. But outside of school and football it can get ugly. The PC crowd is there, but there’s always going to be that undercurrent of hate. Love the sinner hate the sin seems to lose the first part more often than I’d like.”

@Tracy: Most people still call your man ‘Levi’, but you seem to prefer to call him ‘Liv’. Since you knew him as both personas separately, how do you choose what name to use?

“Oh good, I thought you were going to ask me if I have a pet name for him?” Tracey blushes but continues. “Uh, whichever name fits the personality he’s displaying at the time. He’s more Liv with me in private, and Levi in public. Livy is more his extreme personality, when he starts calling me Sugar I know Livy St. Cinq is about to sprout out of his mouth. Living with him makes for some interesting dinner conversation.”

@Bo: Since you came out so publicly, then went on to win two Super Bowls, have things changed for you in the locker room? By that, I mean, does your team generally treat you with respect now or is there still a struggle with homophobia within the team?

“Well, technically, we won the first championship before I came out. But yeah, even now there’s still issues in the locker room. New guys come in, they know, but they don’t know, you know. As the team rotates around me, I find myself still having to prove myself. I’m still the only gay player. So it’s still me against the other fifty-two it seems like sometimes.”

@Will: Same question. Is this something you worry about, should you return to the team or football in general?

Will looks at floor, hands clasped between his knees. “I’m not out. And don’t look at me like that Levi, I know your opinion on the subject but…Jude is okay with that decision. We’ve talked about it. I don’t consider myself to be gay regardless of who I’m sleeping with. He’s not pushing me to make some big declaration. He knows it’s going to be tough enough this next season without the big announcement hanging over my head. So let’s just leave it at that. Sorry, Bo, I’d love to jump right in there with you but…”

“Hey, man, I don’t blame you. I wouldn’t have come out at all except for a moment of complete stupidity on my part. The water is ice cold in the league. But it’s changing. Slowly.” Bo nods.  He doesn’t look happy about it, but he accepts.

“I wasn’t going to say anything. What? That’s pot and kettle territory there. Do as I say and not as I did, no way, man, not gonna come from my mouth. You’ll make that decision on your own, if it’s something you want the team to know then tell them, if not, it’s not their business.” Levi chimes in in a show of solidarity.

@Bo: We know things are still occasionally a little rocky for you and Dylan. Do you think working together on the team contributes to that at all? How much of Dylan’s experience overseas is still a factor?

“We have our problems like everyone else. We work through them. Unlike most people, we have two completely different “pasts” to deal with. Our childhood where we’re both this golden ideal and then the time we were apart. Sometimes that time apart rears it’s ugly head and interferes with the golden memories. I see him in pain. I see him hop around on one foot. I get so angry because he’s not the same man he was before the military fucked him up, physically, mentally, and…not something I really want to talk about right now.” He wipes at his eye without looking to see how Dylan took that. “We go to therapy. He goes to a lot of therapy. I think having him on the team has been probably the best thing since he came home. I like having him there. I like seeing him smile and have fun when he’s working with the quarterbacks. I wish he’d been the one to come in and take Levi’s place….but if wishes were horses, you know.”

@Dylan: Are you still struggling with PTSD? Are there ways that Bo is helping you to overcome it? How difficult has it been adapting to using a prosthesis and how has it impacted your lifestyle?

“PTSD…every damned day of my life. It’s like a cloak I can’t throw off. I have nightmares so bad sometimes I forget where I am. Bo has taken me on when I’m terrified and fighting for my life. I see the black eyes or the bruised ribs the next day and I know I did that and I hate myself for it. But he pulls me back. He keeps me sane. Sometimes I worry that he’s only with me out of some misplaced loyalty. But…yeah, the prosthesis. It wanted to win. I wouldn’t let it. Learning to walk again took months. Long hard months. I didn’t just put it on and run around. It irritates my skin. My leg swells. But, I’m here, and I’m not only walking, I’m running now too. I don’t let those kids see me hurt. I think they’d eat me alive if they knew how much just one practice takes out of me.” Dylan sits stone faced, until Bo takes his hand and holds it, the tough veneer cracking just a little as does his voice. “We’re good. I still have a long way to go. But we’re good.”

“Yeah, we’re good. And going to get better.” Bo squeezes his hand and Dylan looks away, his Adam’s apple bobbing a bit as he swallows hard.

@Dylan: Do you miss being an active duty special forces Marine? Are you happy with what you’re doing now?

“I miss it. Sure. I wanted to re-up for another tour. I was torn between that and coming home to Bo. But…well, my choice was made for me. Anyway…next question.”

@Dylan: Okay then. How often do you top Bo and do you prefer it to bottoming? *grin* Yep, that’s what I asked. Get ready boys, it’s about to get personal.

He gasps…. “Oh my god!”

The rest of the guys get suspiciously quiet as if they are waiting on pins and needles for Dylan’s answer.

“Seriously! Bo…little help here.”

“Oh no, Dyl, you are tee totally on your own on this one.” Bo laughs but his face is flushed with embarrassment.

“Gee, thanks….uh…well, we wrestle for it.” He whispers.

“What was that, didn’t quite hear you, Sunday, you should speak up. Use that Marine drill sergeant voice of yours.” Levi takes the opportunity and runs with it.

“Careful, Five, he’s got his Ka-bar strapped on…and man, we will not come to your defense,” Will laughs and shoves Levi toward Dylan playfully. “But Sunday…really, we didn’t hear that.”

“We fight for it.” Bo smiles a crooked smile. “Whoever wins tops. I win most of the time.”

Dylan continues to stare at the floor.

“Because he lets you win. Oh my god Cephus, he let’s you win because Sunday is secretly a bottom boy…” Levi is long gone now as Livy takes over.

“Liv, leave the poor man alone.” Tracy’s chuckle doesn’t really do much to help matters.

“Okay, fine, I let him win. I like to bottom. At least I haven’t made a profession out of it….just him.”

“Low blow, Sunday…true, but low.”

“Neutral corners.” Tracy moves between them.

“You let me win?” Bo asks, seemingly genuinely surprised.

“Yeah, baby, I let you win.” Dylan grins for the first time. “I’m a Marine, you barely even tickle me, it’s sweet. I like it.”

“Awwww…..”

“Shut up, Five.” Bo ducks his head, his hair falling to hide his blush.

@Bo: You’ve been dedicated to Dylan for a very long time, even if some of that was technically “open” relationship. Tell us something he does to – or for – you that makes him uniquely yours.

“Apparently he lets me win.” Bo blinks innocently.

“Seriously, after I just told the world that I prefer to bottom and that’s all you’re going to spill.” Dylan shifts indignantly and crosses his arms over his chest. He looks on as if he too is curious to know exactly what it is that makes him special.

Bo sits for a moment, looking lost and confused. “He makes me happy.”

“That’s it. That’s all you’ve got after all that we’ve been through together?” Dylan asks, his face gone hard again.

“What else is there? I mean, I could say you make me a better person. You make me want to move mountains or write poetry or that it’s all sex….and all that is great. But, Dyl, the fact is, you make me happy. All of those Skype sessions we had while you were deployed. That’s what got me through every single day of my life. Seeing your face. Listening to you talk. Knowing that you love me as much as I love you. I didn’t care if we’d have something when you came home, I just cared that I saw your face and that you were alive and I was happy. I see your face every morning and I’m happy. That’s it. No big secret. Whatever else there is, that’s the end all be all right there.”

There isn’t a word out of anyone while Dylan kisses him.

@Levi: What is your favorite feature or expression or body part of Tracy’s?

“Huh?” Levi tears his gaze away from the kissing. “Wait, what now?”

“The question was what’s your favorite feature or expression or body part of Tracy’s?” Tracy supplies.

“I was hoping for the who bottoms question.”

“But everyone already knows the answer to that,” Will chimes in and winces. “Can’t unsee that if I tried.”

“Well, you shouldn’t have been looking.” Levi squeaks. “Serves you right…..feature, expression or body part….so I guess saying his–”

“If you say that, I will withhold that particular body part for a week.” Tracy’s squeak is almost as impressive.

“I was going to say your mouth when you’re angry…but you’re the one who made it dirty.” Levi replies.

“Oh, yeah, okay. Sorry.” Tracey blushes. “So what about my mouth?”

“You get angry….a lot…did you notice? And soo, I like to watch your mouth when you’re pissed off. Something about it turns me on. Why do you think we got together in the first place? Little hint, it wasn’t your sweet disposition and winning way with people. You pretty much had me at the first ‘who the fuck do you think you are’. I couldn’t stop thinking about what your mouth would feel like wrapped around my–”

“And he went there anyway. That’s my Liv.” Tracy grabs Levi in a headlock, covering his mouth. “It couldn’t be a simple he makes me happy could it?”

Levi just shakes his head.

@Tracy: What’s the first thing that came to mind when Levi answered that last question?

Still holding Levi in a headlock…. “Uh, how much longer is this going to take and where’s the nearest restroom.”

Levi pulls Tracy’s hand away. “I’m not sure that’s what she wanted to hear….but I agree, how much longer is this going to take and where’s the nearest restroom?”

@Jude: What’s the fastest way Will can get you revved up and ready to go?

“Me? Why me?” Jude has a deer in headlights look.

“Because you look entirely too smug sitting over there pretending you’re above all of this.” Levi shoots his brother a smirk. Jude shoots him back something else entirely. “Not now, Judah, this is a family program.”

“Oh, my god,” Jude seems flustered until Will takes his hand.

“Challenge him at Jeopardy. Makes him horny when I know the answers. I can pretty much do whatever I want to him after that.”

“Why is it we watched Jeopardy one time. ONE and it’s been a running joke ever since.”

“Wow, Slayer actually knew an answer to a Jeopardy question, I’m impressed.” This from Bo. And this time it’s Will with the one finger salute.

“They bicker. Like a couple of old tom cats fighting over a fish carcass. I’ve never seen anything like it before. Jude likes being right. And Will hates to be wrong. And then they’re going at it on the floor.” Levi answers the question for them.

“That only happened that one time.” It’s Jude’s turn to duck his head in embarrassment.

“You could have waited until we left. Now I’m scarred for life.”

“But you didn’t leave, you watched,” Will shouts back.

“And took video. I still have it for blackmail purposes.”

“Leviticus!”

“Judah!”

“Will someone just kill me now. Please.” Will growls.

@Will: Dirty talk – love it or leave it? What could Jude say to take you from zero to blow in no time flat?

“One word….. Weeellllyum.”

Jude hides his face in his hands. “What?” Will looks around at the gaping mouths. “I like when he goes country boy on me.”

“Oh my god. Can someone pass me Dylan’s Ka-bar? Please.” Jude says without uncovering his face.

“Oh, no, I want to hear more about this accent.” Levi replies.

“It’s probably not as thick as yours when you start begging, so leave him alone.” Tracy winks, his own accent pretty thick.

@All: Most private or personal guilty pleasure? Don’t worry, it’s just you, me, and -oh – about a thousand readers. *grin*

“There is no guilt in pleasure.” Levi ignores the quip about his accent. “I like pretty much everything.”

“We know,” Everyone else says at the same time.

Will: “Porn.”

Again with a chorus of “we know”.

Tracy: “I don’t know. Besides Levi, I can’t think of a thing.”

“Aww so sweet,” Levi cooes. “I would have said coffee. But I like your answer better.”

“The smell of paint.” Jude answers and everyone turns to look at him as if he’s grown a second head. “Why can’t it be something besides sex or food? I like the smell of fresh paint.”

“Probably because you ate too many paint chips as a kid.” Levi says, ignoring the kick Tracy gives him.

“Cheeseburgers. And don’t ask why.” Dylan says, his face gone stoney again as he turns his attention to Bo. “That just leaves you.”

Bo blushes. “Silk sheets.”

And then everyone looks at Levi….”Hey don’t look at me, I hate silk sheets, so he didn’t pick that up from me. I like to roll in the bed not slide right off the other side.”

Mercy: “Sitting in on conversations like this and taking notes. And being happy that they forget I’m here and will talk freely in front of me…..well, that and a pint of Late Night Snack ice cream with the chocolate covered potato chips and the vein of salted caramel.”

To which all the guys say “We know!”

@Mercy: If you had to kill off one character from this group…
Just kidding!! We know you have another book in the Southern Scrimmage series planned. Do you have a solid plan for it yet? How much involvement do you expect this current cast to have in the upcoming storyline?

Mercy looks at the guys, and they all point to Dylan. “He gives her the worst fits.”

“Because she killed me once already and left me for dead for months. I don’t trust her. She’s nuts.”

“Well, it could be Levi….he keeps changing his mind on who he is. I can’t keep up. And for the record, he has way more than four boas. He hasn’t shown everyone all of his secrets yet.”

“And you said you’d never tell. Now I shall never trust you again.”

“Then I’m going to kill you off in book four. I’ve already planned it out. One slip of the scalpel and Levi is toast.”

“That’s her way of quoting Die Hard….The Quarterback IS Toast.” Levi nods an aside to Tracey.

Mercy makes a stabbing motion…..

“Alright, I have thirty-one boas. One for every day of the month. Are you happy?”

“Immensely. And you can be in book four.”

“Of course, he’s her favorite after all.”

“Judah!”

“Mercy!”

“To answer the question, I haven’t plotted book four out yet, but I left enough dangling threads to pick up and run with. Some of the unanswered questions will be answered. The gauntlet Jude dropped on national television will be a major plot line. Will’s cousin is still at large. Levi’s surgery. The ‘did Levi make a huge confession’ question will be answered. It might not be what you think. The current rookie quarterback will be the MC of this one. A rival will challenge him for his job. There will be more football but as with the first three it’s not about football, it’s about the players. The mothers of all of the guys will show up. And we’ll find out what really went down with Miss Brody. I’ve hinted at her whereabouts for two books now. I think it will be at least as long as Offside Chance, hopefully it won’t be longer, each book has been double the previous one and I really don’t want to write a two hundred thousand word novel. So book four is Angels and Demons, or Raphael and Damien and that’s all I can say right now.”

Sidelined, Southern Scrimmage #2

Judah Brody meets William Slater and it’s loathe at first sight.

Jude had spent his whole life in his famous brother’s shadow. Returning to New Orleans seemed like a good idea now that Levi was back home. But Jude couldn’t turn around without something of Levi’s getting in his way. In this case it’s Levi’s best friend, a three hundred pound knuckle-dragger named Slayer, who likes strippers, football, porn and making Jude’s life miserable—not necessarily in that order.

William Slater’s season couldn’t get much worse. He lost his house to fire, his contract was set to expire, and his prospects of getting picked up by another team were slim to none.
